Antonie Fuqua Thinks Idris Elba Would Be A Good James Bond

UPDATE - The Hollywood Reporter has just thrown cold water all over this story.

At a press event for his new business venture SoundFi, director Antonie Fuqua revealed Idris Elba would be a good James Bond.

According to The Daily Star, Fuqua said he has spoken to EoN boss and Bond producer Barbara Broccoli who told him “it is time” for a black actor to play the iconic character and “it will happen eventually.”

The Equalizer 2 helmer then suggested Luther actor Idris Elba could do a good job saying “Idris could do it if he was in shape. You need a guy with [a] physically strong presence. Idris has that.”

This story was then reported by The Independent hinting Elba is the new frontrunner and then Esquire is stating the producers are “leaning towards” Idris being Bond!

Nether Fuqua or what he said about Broccoli said anything like that.

I will state personally, Elba isn’t right for the role. Not get me wrong actors can do multiple roles, but if the Londoner does get the role Bond producers will have to wait again.

This is due to 45-year-olds commitment to Netflix’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which he spoke to Empire about, where he’s not only starring but will also be directing and producing the reimagining as well as producing the music.

If Elba was just starring then sure he could be Bond, but the fact he’s doing three important jobs will make the actor too busy and will be closer to 50 when available.

However, if Broccoli does want to wait and make a Dark Knight Returns/Old Man Logan Bond film then awesome go for it. I just don’t think the Bond producers will want to wait and will likely make an announcement before filming for Bond 25 beginnings at the end of the year.

While I don’t think Elba is right for the role, it doesn’t mean I don’t want a black actor for the role as I believe the likes of David Oyelowo and Chiwetel Ejiofor are better for the character regretted at 42 and 41 respectfully they’ll have three films max.

Furthermore, if Broccoli and MGM want to have someone to have a longer run in the franchise then 29-year-old Daniel Kaluuya would be a great choice and with Crazy Rich Asians coming out Stateside, Henry Golding as the look to be a decent Bond.

At 31-years-old and limited acting, this casting might come round too early but once the role is available and continue this rise then I have no doubt he’ll be top three candidates.
