With the Todd Phillips directed JOKER beginning next month with Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role. This could be a new era of comic book movies in a world of the MCU and DCU, Warner Bros could be about to bring something new to audiences with their R-rated more adult singular stories.
This shouldn’t be a surprise as this sticks to DC Comics style that they’ve done for years with first the Elseworlds and now more recently with DC Black Label (click here for more info), Batman: Damned looks fucking awesome.

The studio could follow suit if JOKER is a success next year and on a production budget of $55 million and make a massive profit then I won't be surprised if the announcement of DC Black is a side production of DC Films.
Meanwhile, if the JOKER is a success then it’ll be time to think about what’s next? Here are a few ideas for possible future films.
Lex 2020
What a brilliant way to embed a previous comic with the same year of the next US presidential election focusing on Superman’s greatest villain, Lex Luthor.
Similar to the Joker situation, you can bring in a different actor to play the DC villain but, instead of a younger version like Jesse Eisenberg, you can bring in an actor in his late 40s/50s.
The film could focus on the world in 2020, Gotham City is in the aftermath of an earthquake destroying (similar to the Lex 2000 comic) we could see the megalomaniac billionaire taking advantage of the situation point at the of leadership in the administration and runs for president before greed, corruption and deception brought him down.
This seems to be the ideal story for someone like Aaron Sorkin, he has previously stated to have met with Warner Bros about a possible DC movie plus he could use it to air his issues with current President Trump, but maybe just underline hints.
After the positive reaction to Molly’s Game Sorkin will likely want to helm the project as well as write the screenplay and use The West Wing as source material.
A project like this should be on the same production budget as JOKER something along the lines of $50-60 million.
However, this choice isn’t down to the fact he impersonates Trump on Saturday Night Live but Alec Baldwin I believe would be a good choice as if you watch his performance in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Fallout showcased he could be a strong leader. Furthermore, his voice just seemingly suits the character similar when Clancy Brown voiced Lex in the animated series.
Meanwhile, for some reason, I’ve always felt Stanley Tucci would be great as Luthor as he’s great in everything I watch him in.
Wildcard – I’m sure this would annoy some people but because these are standalone stories it’s to say we couldn't have a black actor in the role and Andre Braugher would be a fantastic choice. I know he’s better known for this comedic role as Captain Ray Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Yet his voice would come across charming and menacing.
To really make an impact I’d have the release date the weekend before the actual elections are announced.
Because I don’t think every story should focus solely on Batman and Superman characters as well as being dramatic, we should be able to have some laughs.
Which is why I think Booster Gold won’t be apart of the DCU just now (maybe not at all) but could be a character to use for a solo film.
My pitch for this movie DCU/ DC Black still stands. Have Andy Samberg in the lead with his Lonely Island bandmates Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer directing and all three penning the screenplay.

Basically, make it the superhero version of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.
As the title could easily be called The Amazons and bring to life Kelly Sue DeConnick’s upcoming three-book historic saga focusing on Queen Hippolyta and the Amazons from the creation of the Amazons to before Steve Trevor crash lands on Themyscira.
In the film, we could see Hippolyta and the Amazons being created and after seeing the old gods being murdered they have to battle Ares and his army on the warpath to protect Zeus with the final moments of the film see the birth of Diana.
Directing wise, looking at films like 300, Gladiator and Ben-Hur will come to mind but look at great action films will be a benefit.
I’m sure Warner Bros would look to bringing in a female director and Lynne Ramsey comes to mind because I love You Were Never Really There, I like the idea of her doing some epic and different to her previous film and We Need To Talk About Kevin.
On the other hand, Michelle McLaren could be a decent choice due to the fact she was originally going to direct the first Wonder Woman so this could be a better suit for her.
As for casting and Queen Hippolyta being the lead, we’d need an actress in her mid/late 20s or early/mid-30s as this would be a younger version of Connie Nielsen.
I think you could have a number of actresses up for the role with my top five being Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Gemma Chan, Florence Pugh, Ana de Armes and Priyanka Chopra.
Wildcards – Both in their 40s but could still kick arse and lead an army are Rosamond Pike and Lena Headey.
As for Ares and Zeus could be played by men of the similar age so Clive Owen, Mads Mikkelsen, Daniel Craig, Sterling K. Brown and David Oyelowo would be great choices to play the gods.
I’m sure a Batman film would get added onto this with Gotham by Gaslight or newest DC Label title Batman: Last Night on Earth. The same can be said of Superman with Red Son the go too.
As it stands and if JOKER is successful you’d have five different films in five different genres.
JOKER – R-rated Crime Drama
Lex 2020 – R-rated Political Drama
Booster Gold – R-rated Comedy Mockumentary
Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons/ The Amazons – R-rated Historical Action
