The final piece of the Birds of Prey jigsaw has been completed as Cathy Yan has found her Cassandra Cain by casting newcomer Ella Jay Basco.
Basco will be joining an awesome cast to which she will be able to learn from with Margot Robbie returning as Harley Quinn, Elizabeth Winstead was cast as Huntress while Black Canary will be played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Rosie Perez is portraying Gotham City PD detective Renee Montoya.
It was only a matter of time Cain’s casting was confirmed as two weeks prior Ewan McGregor was confirmed to be the film’s villain Black Mask, who’s a kingpin in Gotham City’s criminal underworld.
Variety, who broke the story, gave some sort of synopsis was to what the film will be about.
As Harley, Huntress and Canary have to team-up to protect Cain when she gets her hands on a diamond belonging to Black Mask.
It must be stated Basco won’t be playing a damsel in distress as Cain. As the DC Comics character is a little badass being the daughter of assassin parents David Cain and Lady Shiva. Cassandra was deprived of human contact and speech so she could grow up to become the world’s greatest assassin.
Eventually, she befriends Bruce Wayne and becomes Batgirl and even though Warner Bros is developing a Batgirl movie it’s unlikely to be Basco as she’s currently a child but it won’t mean she doesn’t grow up to become Orphan.
Basco is all set to become DC’s own X23 so fully expect comparisons to Logan's Dafne Keen will happen.
Yan’s R-rated DC Film will begin filming in January for a February 2020 release date.
