Obi-Wan Kenobi has joined the dark side of the DC Universe as it was revealed Ewan McGregor will be playing the villain Black Mask in the upcoming DC movie Birds of Prey.
McGregor’s potential involvement has been rumoured for a while, but The Wrap broke the story that the Scottish actor is in final negotiations with Warner Bros to join the Cathy Yan directed female team-up.
While other trades state he’s officially joined the Margot Robbie led project.
Either way, it looks likely McGregor will be playing the unknown Batman mob boss opposite his girlfriend Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who’s playing Huntress.
Now with Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Carney and Renee Montoya being played by Rosie Perez, all but one lead is yet to be filled and that final role is Cassandra Cain.
Yan was recently speaking at the US-China entertainment summit and confirmed Cain will be involved and that the film will indeed be an R-rating.
The Dead Pigs helmer also talked about what attached her to the project (via Deadline) revealing, “I could not put the script down, it had so much dark humour to it which a lot of my work does, and there are themes of female empowerment which are so strong and relatable.
“So I went in with, not with confidence, but at least a sense that I belonged in the room, that somehow magically in terms of timing and luck that this opportunity was open to me and I was definitely going to make the best of it” Yan added.
The filmmaker goes on to talk about how her pitch technique to WB was slightly different to what studios got previously in those sort of meetings.
“I have never done any of these things and I asked my agents for examples to get a better sense: I put together a pitch deck and also assembled a sizzle reel.
“But I would say it wasn’t like a lot of other sizzle reels which reference other films that remotely feel like your film. I find those rather pointless. But I created my own version that thematically and tonally conveyed what you would feel (in my movie).”
Even though I’ve seen Dead Pigs during the London Film Festival I got a sense of what Yan will bring to the DCU and Birds of Prey but let’s hope the script is much, much better because of that reason Dead Pigs was a bad film.
