James Gunn Could Be Directing Suicide Squad Sequel

James Gunn looks set to be back directing major tentpole comic book movies as the fired Guardians of the Galaxy helmer is in talks to direct the Suicide Squad sequel.

It comes to no one’s surprise as he was brought in to write the sequel based on the Warner Bros 2016 hit on a band on DC Comics anti-heroes and villains with the film getting a release date of August 2021 (two months after The Batman newly slated release).

If the deal is completed then this will be the next directorial job for Gunn to the sadness to the cast and fans of Guardians of the Galaxy since they felt he was unfairly sacked for his 2008 and 2009 tweets resurfaced.

The Hollywood Reporter stated the film is titled The Suicide Squad,  but what’s interesting the movie isn’t being labelled as a direct sequel instead Gunn and the studio are thinking it as more of a relaunch.

What’s more interesting about this news is THR sources are saying the filmmaker will be taking the franchise in a new direction with a vibe similar to his work on the two Guardians movies, but with my hope of being a bit hard then those films.

They also say it’ll have a “mostly all-new cast of characters and actors.”

This is important because to me it sounds like the right way to go and even though I liked David Ayer’s 2016 film, with a little more critical success it could become a billion-dollar property despite it not having to be.

Moreover, the Suicide Squad has never been one team they’ve always had new characters joining the mainstays. The first person WB and DC Films will want to return is Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, she should be the first person to be cast for the film as she was perfect as Waller in the DCEU movie.

Warner will be hoping Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn will be the next character want back. However, I don’t think she’d be needed as one of the main characters instead be running around Gotham as part of the Birds of Prey or Gotham City Sirens.

Instead, bringing in a new female character would be great like it would be awesome to see Killer Frost get her moment on the big screen.

Finally, I love Deadshot and Captain Boomerang as a double act as Boomerang annoys the living crap of Floyd Lawton. Bringing back Will Smith should be fine as Bad Boyz For Life would’ve wrapped filming and will be in shape to start a summer filming for Suicide Squad.

As for Jai Courtney playing Captain Boomerang is the best I’ve seen him perform.
From there it leaves a massive door open for Gunn to pick a number of villains to join his Task Force X.

Finally, I think WB would be fools not to bring out Gunn at San Diego Comic Con and let him talk about his Squad for a couple of minutes and unveil his Task Force X with his cast in costume in the first official photo.

Furthermore, I’d have filming being the same time this summer or a couple of weeks later somewhere in the US as it would take the focus away from The Batman and it would give Gunn two years to shoot, edit and any other post-production work like reshoots.

I can also see the August release moving by about two months as it’ll give The Batman another time to have a billion run throughout the summer 2021 and then Autumn (or Fall for American readers) will give a decent run going into Christmas and people could be wearing the costumes for Halloween.
