Directed By – James Marsh
Starring – Michael Caine, Jim Broadbent, Ray Winstone, Charlie Cox, Tom Courtenay, Paul Whitehouse, Michael Gambon.
In Easter 2015, the Hatton Garden heist was the biggest story in the UK and something about the fact these old school London robbers, with the youngest in his 60s and the oldest in their 80s with the total age of 448, went and did one last big job, in fact, the biggest robbery in UK history with a reported £200 million stolen. All but one went to jail and there are rumours still that over £100 million is still missing.
It was such as a great story that it spun two films, one more indie based starring Larry Lamb, Matthew Goode and Phil Daniels and then you have King of Thieves with a stellar cast of UK acting legends and the Daredevil himself Cox with Oscar-winning director Marsh helming the film.
This film has an issue with what it wants to be because there is a large part that wants it to be a comedy, understandable given the subject, but it also was being serious and gritty. While in the midst of all of this, the characters, especially Caine and Winstone, are incredibly likeable.

Marsh doesn’t judge you if you did but doesn’t shy away from continually state these people are criminals.
Speaking of the direction, it was enjoyable to watch and didn’t feel like it was or wanted to copy Guy Ritchie's template from Snatch and Lock, Stock. We got to meet the characters in a more an organic way instead of a voiceover.
As for the film, it’s pretty run of the mill and doesn’t add anything new or groundbreaking. You’re really watching for the chance to see all these legendary actors in one movie and on that side, it’s enjoyable with a nice, respectful nod to the past.
I just wish they picked a tone and went for it as a comedy all of them would’ve been great or as a gritty crime drama they’d equally excel.
It’s a perfect movie to watch at home and the DVD and Blu-Ray has plenty of decent bonus features.
Verdict
A good film to watch at home to see some of the greatest British actors on screen at the same time.
