The Favourite Leads EE BAFTA Academy Film Awards With 12 Nominations

IMAGE VIA BAFTA

While it might not be taken as seriously to our Stateside relatives, but I have a lot of love for the BAFTAs and it’s my second favourite film award obviously behind the Oscars.

So this morning was exciting as the nominations for the 2019 EE British Academy Film Awards with The Favourite leading the way with 12 nominations including Best Film, Best Outstanding British Film and Olivia Coleman for Leading Actress. Meanwhile, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone both got Supporting Actress nomination and Yorgos Lanthimos is in the running for Best Director.

Elsewhere, Roma, First Man, Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born were all nominated in 7 categories.

Roma and A Star Is Born joins The Favourite in Best Film while the films director’s Bradley Cooper and Alfonso Cuarón will be in the Best Director category.

Cooper and Lady Gaga are involved in the Leading Actor and Actress categories respectfully.

As for Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami Malek got the nom for Leading Actor for his performance as Freddie Mercury.

First Man’s main nominations came in the technical categories, but there was a Supporting Actress nomination for Claire Foy.

There were six nominations for Vice with three of them in performance categories including Christian Bale in the Leading Actor for his role as US Vice President Dick Cheney while Amy Adams and Sam Rockwell in the Supporting categories as Lynne Cheney and President George W. Bush.

There was love for Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman up for five awards including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Adam Driver, and Lee himself got Best Director and Adapted Screenplay.

Coleman and Lady Gaga will be joined in the Leading Actress category by Glenn Close (The Wife), Viola Davis (Widows) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?).

It was a genuine surprise Jessie Buckley didn’t a nomination for Leading Actress for her performance in Beast, which did get some BAFTA love in the form of Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut By A British Writer, Director or Producer.

A surprise could be said for Saoirse Ronan missing out in the Leading Actress nomination for her performance in Mary, Queen of Scots as it was Margot Robbie securing the only performance award for the film in Supporting Actress as Queen Elizabeth.

Finally, it did an Outstanding British Film nomination but it’s annoying to see You Were Never Really Here missing out on Best Film and Best Director because Lynne Ramsey helmed an incredible movie.

Here’s the full list of nominees with my winning picks highlighted.
