Films To See In 2016 Part One

2016 could be the strongest years EVER in movie history as every mouth from Janurary to December will feature massive blockbusters to indie giant killers. TBA Movie Podcast will help give you an idea of what films you should see in 2016.

The Jungle Book – 15th April 2016

In recent years Disney’s live action adaptations of their classic animated films have been below par with Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie left audiences underwhlemed. However, this year the Sir Kenneth Branagh directed Cinderella was received with great reviews from critics and audiences alike and this positivity looks to continue with the live action adaptation of the 1967 classic.

Why Should I See It?

The Jungle Book, directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Elf), was the star of D23 (Disney’s own convention) beating Marvel and their sizzle reel for Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange, more on those tomorrow, with its beautiful and seamless blend of CGI animals and environments (no Beverly Hills Chihuahua ballshit here) and you’ll be amazed that young newcomer Neel Sethi as Mowgli is the only live action part of this film. The trailer also showed us how beautiful this film will be and the fun we’ll all have.

It also has a stellar voice cast including Bill Murray as Baloo, Idris Elba as Shere Khan, Sir Ben Kingsley as Bagheera, Christopher Walken as King Louie and Scarlett Johansson as Kaa.

Just picturing Murray singing ‘The Bare Necessities’ makes me smile and lets hope Murray and Walken do ‘I Want To Be Like You’.

Assassin’s Creed – 30th December 2016

Film adaptations of video games have either massively disappointed or flopped at the box office altogether, but 2016 could finally be the year that changes with three video game based movies released with Doug Jones’ Warcraft and Angry Birds. However, I’m focusing on Assassin’s Creed.

Why Should I See It?

At the moment it all depends on if Warcraft can break the mood and be an exciting and fun, but more importantly, good film which makes a decent impact on the box office. Otherwise Assassin’s Creed is the last roll of the dice and I personally think it will be a success because it stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in an action adventure set in 15th century Spain, directed by Justin Kurzel.

All three have already worked together on Macbeth, which was a critical success with Fassbender and Kurzel getting a lot of praise. The synopsis should help with giving you a better understanding of what the film will be about:

"Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day."

We’ll know more when the teaser trailer comes out on 25th March (now doesn’t that date sound familiar?)
