Films To See In 2016 - Part Two

Yesterday I brought you Part One of my ‘Films To See In 2016’ and today we’ll be diving into one, or if not thee, biggest studios in Hollywood today and the most successful cinematic universe. Which brings in some of the most exciting directors in the film industry and teaming them up with A list actors or promising up and comers.

I’m obviously talking about the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This year sees the start of Phase Three with Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange.

Captain America: Civil War – 29th April 2016
After the events in Captain America: Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron governments of the world have designed an act to register and regulate all superhero activity following the destruction of Sokovia. The Avengers have polarising views, which causes two factions to choose between Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) or Captain America (Chris Evans) to which causes a battle between the former allies.

With the only missing members of the Avengers being Thor and Hulk, it’s hard not to admit this film is, sort of, Avengers 2.5. However, despite the huge cast list, Captain America: Civil War will focus on three people: Captain America (duh, it’s his movie), his old war buddy (and mass murderer) Bucky (Sebastian Stan) and Tony Stark/Iron Man. Love triangle anyone?

Now, judging by the trailer this will be more than just a superhero movie, it will be more of a political thriller which seems to be the most important thing the directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, will want to get across. It’ll still have the trademark Marvel quips and humour, but the thriller aspect will be the overall tone of this film.

If that doesn’t excite you already, maybe having the big screen debut of Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Spider – Man (Tom Holland) swinging in to make his first appearance in the MCU will get you to your local cinema.

Doctor Strange – 28th October 2016
If the Avengers has given us the real world, Guardians of the Galaxy gave us the bigger galactic universe and now get ready to enter the mystical with Doctor Strange.

Originally an arrogant neurosurgeon named Dr Stephen Strange, the character is transformed into a magically powered superhero following a horrific car accident.

Why Should I See It?
If you thought Guardians was out there, wait until the first trailer of this film hits the web, Doctor Strange will be focused heavily on the 60s psychedelic visuals of the comic book. The film is directed by Scott Derrickson, who is better known for his horror, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch.

Derrickson looks like the perfect choice as Doctor Strange needs the horror vibe to make the crazy mystical stuff work. Also Marvel chief boss Kevin Feige has described this film as an “acid trip” which sounds more interesting than Marvel’s other 2016 film Captain America: Civil War.

Judging by the first look images of Cumberbatch as Strange, which were released yesterday via Entertainment Weekly, the Sherlock actor seems to have impressed fans with his uncanniness to the comic book character.

The film also has a stellar cast with Mads Mikkelson as the main villain, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One and in the comic book transforms Strange into a sorcerer. Oscar Nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor will play the nobleman Baron Mordo and Rachel McAdams is in an unknown role.

To be honest out of these two films, Doctor Strange has me more excited because it’s something completely different to other superhero films as I can probably plan how Captain America: Civil War pans out.
