The Oscars belong to Leonardo DiCaprio, as he finally won the Best Actor award for The Revenant. While Spotlight, Tom McCarthy’s real – life drama about the Boston Globe journalists exposing the ring of paedophile priests, pulled off a surprise shock winning Best Picture.

All signs looked to have pointed to The Revenant after winning Best Cinematography, Best Actor and Best Director for Alejando G. Inarritu as McCarthy’s film only won one other award on the night – Best Original Screenplay – until that point.

Mad Max: Fury Road completely dominated the technical categories and picking up six awards on the night, while Ennio Morricone and Sam Smith made sweet music winning Best Original Score and Best Original Song respectfully.

Much like DiCaprio, Brie Larson, who was the heavy favourite, won the Best Actress gong and both DiCaprio and Larson completed the clean sweep at this award season, winning the Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA and now they can add an Academy Award.

I’m so happy Larson won, when I saw Room at the London Film Festival last year she was the only actress I wanted to win because she was just breathtaking, outstanding, there’s not enough words I can say to praise this film.

The only other actress I would have liked to have seen win the award was Sairose Ronan, who looked jaw droppingly beautiful on at the ceremony, for her role in Brooklyn because she carries the film and I fully recommend you watching it as it’s now at on DVD and Blu-ray.

Chris Rock was hosting this year’s ceremony and he went to the much talked about #OscarsSoWhite issue. Firstly, he took to the stage to Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” and using humour he addressed the big issue.

Here are some of the quotes from his opening monologue, but I fully recommend you reading the transcript from the Los Angeles Times.

“Man, I counted at least 15 black people on that montage. Hey! Well, I'm here at the Academy Awards, otherwise known as the White People's Choice Awards.”

About quitting – “I thought about quitting. I thought about it real hard, but I realized they're going to have the Oscars anyway. They're not going to cancel the Oscars because I quit. And the last thing I need is to lose another job to Kevin Hart. I don't need that. Kev right there! Kev makes movies fast. Every month. Porno stars don't make movies that fast.”

About Jada Smith boycott – “Everybody went mad, you know. It's quite like, Jada got mad? Jada says she's not coming. Protesting. I'm like, "Isn't she on a TV show?" Jada's gonna boycott the Oscars? Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rhianna's panties. I wasn't invited.”

Racism in Hollywood – “Is Hollywood racist? You damn right Hollywood’s racist, but it ain't the racist that you’ve grown accustomed to. Hollywood is sorority racist. It’s like: “We like you Rhonda, but you’re not a Kappa.””

Opportunities – “What I’m trying to say is it’s not about boycotting or anything. It’s just we want opportunity. We want the black actors to get the same opportunities as white actors. That’s it. And not just once. Leo gets a great part every year. All these guys get great parts all the time. But what about the black actors? Look at Jamie Foxx. Jamie Foxx is one of the best actors in the world. Jamie Foxx was so good in “Ray,” that they went to the hospital and unplugged the real Ray Charles. It’s like, “We don’t need two of these.””
