Due to the top quality and American box office success of Finding Dory, there has been worry Pixar would be turning into a sequel making machine. Especially with Cars 3, Toy Story 4 and The Incredibles 2 still to come, but it seems it’s not the case according to company president Jim Morris.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Morris explained the thinking behind the studio making sequels and it’s similar to any other filmmaking decision and the brain trust of John Lasseter, Pete Doctor, Andrew Stanton and more makes.

“Most studios jump on doing a sequel as soon as they have a successful film, but our business model is a filmmaker model, and we don’t make a sequel unless the director of the original film has an idea that they like and are willing to go forward on,” said Morris. “A sequel in some regards is even harder [than the original] because you’ve got this defined world which, on the one hand, is a leg up, and on the other hand has expectations that you can’t disappoint on.”
Morris seems to be commentating on the film industry at the moment has it’s been the year of the sequel to films that didn’t need one and, apart from a few, they’ve ultimately failed at the box office. So it’s great to hear Pixar will be focusing on original films moving forward.
Morris added, “Everything after Toy Story and The Incredibles is an original right now.” Toy Story 4 will be directed by Lasseter and is slated to come out 13th July 2018, Brad Bird returns to helm The Incredibles 2 and arrives summer 2019. The next sequel to come out is Cars 3 which will hit cinemas July 14th, 2017.

With Morris confirming no other sequels are planned at the moment this means you’ll have to wait at least a decade before seeing your old favourites Ratatouille and WALL-E and another visit inside last summer’s smash hit Inside Out.
“Our plan had been to make an original every year and a sequel every other year, if the idea came forth to do it,” says Morris.
However, I could see Inside Out being the next sequel has you can do something similar to Toy Story and we see Riley grow up focusing on her teenage years in the sequel and round it off with Riley as an adult getting married.

Morris also maintains “anything’s possible” and in the world of Pixar its true – 13 years have passed between Nemo and Dory and it’s been 15 years between The Incredibles.
