During this year’s Sundance Film Festival there was one film that blew everyone away, I am talking about Nate Parker’s highly anticipated directorial debut – The Birth Of A Nation.
This film got such an incredibly positive response, and an
extended standing ovation, it lead to Netflix bidding $20 million dollars, which
Parker turned down for Fox Searchlight (sister company to 20th Century Fox)
much lower offer of $17.5 million dollars just so it was able to be seen in
cinemas around the world.
This film is already tipped as a serious Oscar contender and
this was back in January! I know you have no idea who Nate Parker is or what
this film is about, but seriously trust me you’ll know his name by the end of
this year.
Before you see the trailer and judge for yourselves, you
need to know Parker stopped acting for two years just so he can write, produce,
direct and star in this film. This is the true meaning of a passion project.
Set against the antebellum South, THE BIRTH OF A NATION follows Nat Turner (Nate Parker), a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities – against himself and his fellow slaves – Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.
