After showing up at the
Marvel Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts spoke to
Entertainment Weekly and confirmed the identities of Zendaya, Tony Revolori, Jacob Batalon and Laura Harrier’s characters.
These characters are all set to play a part in Homecoming and future sequels, but it doesn’t mean they’ll all be friends of Peter Parker. Those characters are:
Flash Thompson (
Tony Revolori): Flash is probably the best known non-superhero character in the Spider-Man, and was only briefly in Sam Raimi’s 2002 “Spider-Man” and played by a fresh-faced Joe Manganiello, and was popular athletes and bully and tormented “Puny Parker” but idolises Spider-Man and never realised they were one of the same person.

Later on his Spider-Man fandom, and meeting his hero, lead him to become a better person and stop his bullying ways and then joined the U.S Army. Later on, in the comics, he was the third person to host the Venom symbiote.
I’m [Peter Parker’s] bully and I don’t know how cool he is, but when we call cut, I’m just like, ‘Ah! You’re so cool,’” Revolori briefly talking about his character to EW.

Michelle (
Zendaya): When Zendaya was first cast in Homecoming; the only thing we knew was her character’s name was Michelle. Now it’s strongly suggested Zendaya will be playing Michelle Gonzales.

Gonzales is a relative newcomer in the Spider-Man comics, but she meets Parker as an adult and become flatmates and they spend the night together.

Ned Leeds (
Jacob Batalon): In the comics, Leeds is several years older than Parker and worked at the Daily Bugle reporter and was a mainstay in the comics. Later he was brainwashed by Jack O’Lantern to become the second Hobgoblin and then ultimately murdered by O’Lantern.

Liz Allan (
Laura Harrier): Allan was a love interest for Parker, but she was Flash Thompson girlfriend in High School. Then after years away from the comics, it was revealed she was the stepsister of villain The Molten Man and later become Harry Osborn’s wife.

Even though most of these characters have shown up in Parker’s life when he’s an adult, I like how Watt’s thought of certain characters can be turned into high school students as three of them are unknown to casual audiences and probably to comic book fans as well.
I think the best thing about this cast is this feels like a modern day high school and a real life community in Queens with actors from Latino, Hawaiian, African – American and multi-racial backgrounds, and it’s highlighted with Revolori playing Flash Thompson.
We also got confirmation that the film’s villain will indeed be Vulture and even though Watts didn’t go anywhere to confirm Michael Keaton in the role, though
reports suggest he is a member of the cast.

“Vulture’s the first real villain in the Spider-Man comics,” Watts says, “He’s in the second issue. He’s one of the classics from the best rogues’ gallery out there, and we’ve never seen him, he’s never been brought to life.”
Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to be released in UK cinemas July 7th, 2017.
