For a long time now the DC Comics
superhero fun on TV has been a boys club with Arrow and then The Flash having
their footing on Sky One for multiple seasons. However, it’s time of the girls
to have their fun with the Girl of Steel leading the way.
Supergirl follows Kara Zol-El
(Benoist), the cousin of Superman, who escaped the doomed planet of Krypton and
landed on Earth and was raised by the Danverses. Now living and working in
National City under media mogul Cat Grant (Flockhart) along with friends Winn
(Jordan) and James Olsen (Brooks). After years of keeping her superpowers secret,
she gets recruited by Hank Henshaw (Harewood) to work alongside him and her
sister Alex (Leigh) to keeping this world safe from Alien threats.

The first season is good, but needs improving with script and the feel of the show because for the middle part of the season it feels incredibly soapy with weak villains of the week. However, every episode is saved by three actors Harewood, Flockhart and Benoist.
It’s hard to fault Benoist throughout
the whole season, she is Supergirl. She brings this innocence to Kara in her
day clothes working at CatCo, but the minute you see her as Supergirl she
brings this strength and the true meaning of the symbol on her chest.
Then you have Flockhart and
Harewood, who are solid as well and brings much needed acting talent and they
both make every episode they’re in better. Harewood especially brought it in episode
seven ‘Human for a Day’.

Even though the season lags in
the middle, it ends on a high with Benost’s best performance in episode 16 ‘Falling’,
but it’s when we get to see The Flash (Grant Gustin) in episode 18 ‘Worlds
Finest’ where we see the true potential of this show.
It was the most comic bookie episode I’ve seen in any of the DCTV shows, it added so much humour which the show had been missing, easily the best episode of the season and I can't wait to see these two on screen together again.

The other two strong episodes were ‘Bizarro’ and ‘For The Girl Who Has Everything’ which are back to back episodes and based of famous Superman comic stories.
This was ultimately a good season
to binge as you can get through it in three to four days and it’s, as my dad
says, easy going.
Moving forward, this show has
plenty of potential going into season two and with Superman coming on to the
show, it was the smart choice if they’re going to reference him all the time,
and moving to The CW (US network and home to The Flash, Arrow and Legends of
Tomorrow) it’ll have a great chance to move away from the soapy side of things
and make it a decent teen drama.

Verdict
Supergirl Season One has
potential to be a great show and if they continue how the season finished then
I have no doubt it’ll be great with Benoist, Flockhart and Harewood leading the
way.
