Black Panther Rises - Chadwick Boseman Talks Gritty Marvel Film

Besides Captain America: Winter Solider, Marvel films have been known for their light tone. Even previous released Captain America: Civil War could easily be retitled as Civil Disagreement – as it still had moments of humour and was never an actual war.

However, things could be looking differently for Civil War’s standout, breakthrough character Black Panther. King T’Challa of Wakanda does have time to make jokes, he’s too busy ruling his country when we see him in his standalone film.

The film’s lead Chadwick Boseman seems to confirm the 2018 Marvel film will be heading into a different direction tonally.

This interview during San Diego Comic Con has just been released with Boseman saying “It’s funny, because on one hand, the Marvel movies that I’ve liked the most are the ones that are funny.

I love Ant-Man. But for me, most of the time the darker superhero movies are the ones that I gravitate towards, that I love the most.

“So I’m glad that I’m not in an Ant-Man. I’m glad that the tone of (Black Panther) may be a little grittier. I want to establish that from the beginning, that that’s what we were doing. That that’s what I intend to do.

“I feel like we’ll end up in a place that I’ve always wanted to be when I look at superhero movies. Those are the ones I like most. It’s exciting to do that.”

This is music to my ears and what I’ve been looking for Marvel to do since the first Iron Man, and director Ryan Coolger is defiantly the man I want handling this tone.

However, I will be annoyed if critics leaving the cinema saying “It’s great to see a dark superhero film….”

Joining Boseman is Creed’s Michael B. Jordan, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira best known from The Walking Dead.

Black Panther is set to be released in the UK on 9th February 2018 and in the US on February 16, 2018.
