Fans have been excited about a new Tomb Raider franchise ever since Warner Bros announced the project and the excitement grew, when Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander was cast as Lara Croft.
We’ve now learnt what sort of Croft will be coming to the big screen and it’s an awesome kick-ass heroine who has bigger problems than discussing her new man.
In an interview with The Sunday Times (via Digital Spy), the 28-year-old revealed the new Tomb Raider movie will pass an important test known as the Bechdel test (a test where at least two women are in the film talking to each other about something besides a man).
“I did 18 films and never got to act with another woman.
“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider actually has relationships and stories. It actually passes the (Bechdel) test” Vikander told the newspaper.
During the interview, the Oscar winner also added the 2018 adaptation will overthrow the expectations of her character and will turn the male gaze right on its head.
“I’ve read a lot of scripts, and ideas of women in these big films just me snore, come on, aren’t we past this?” she added.
Vikander will be playing a young Tomb Raider on her first ever globe-spanning mission and has been described by the actress as an “origin story” and will be directed by Roar Uthaug (The Wave).

Finally, Alicia revealed where the iconic video game character will originate from, saying “It’s a girl living in East London.” She said “It is the place to be? Yeah (it’s) the place to be.
“It’s the story of her becoming who we know her as.”
It’s a great time to be an actress in Hollywood as more and more studios are building strong female leads, look at Star Wars with Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Jyn (Felicity Jones), Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, you also have Ocean’s Eight, The Hunger Games and Sci-fi epic Arrival starring Amy Adams.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is set to hit UK cinemas on March 16, 2018.
