It was a slow news week in the world of DC Films, but a few stories did come out focusing on The Batman, James Wan’s Aquaman and Wonder Woman is a UN ambassador.

Why We Need To Chill Out About The Batman
With a huge slate still in front of them and Wonder Woman and Justice League released in eight to 13 months respectively, the entire buzz around DC Films centres on Ben Affleck’s standalone Batman.

I’ve written stories about this film in the past and gotten excited about any news regarding The Batman, but luckily Forbes’ own fanboy Mark Hughes (not the Stoke football manager) put to bed a lot of the recent rumours and speculation in this brilliantly written article.

Hughes confirms the first draft of the script is done and they’re in the process of rewrites stating “Yes, a first draft of the screenplay for the solo Batman movie has been finished. Rewrites are still being done, but the final draft is nearing completion (if it isn’t already done by now). And the script is indeed tentatively titled The Batman.”

Hughes goes on to add both Affleck and Warner Bros don’t want reports and questions about Batman to overshadow his current projects. This is understandable as Affleck’s next directed film Live By Night gets released early January 2017, so they’d want all the buzz to go on this film and be an Oscar contender.

The working title is still called The Batman, but it must be stressed this is A WORKING TITLE nothing has been confirmed or finalised by the studio. I think they can’t do any better than this for a title.

Yes, Ben Affleck will still star and direct to bring his screenplay to life. He’ll also be producing and editing this film to as this is his childhood dream (he had a batman cave in his house for god sake). The only thing that’ll stop this from happening if some major and huge happens between WB and Affleck.

Hughes adds production will tentatively begin next year; Deathstroke (played by Joe Manganiello) is the film’s villain, but interestingly “not the only one in the film” and Deathstroke will indeed be in Justice League to help set up events in The Batman.

Manganiello recently stated his schedule will being in Spring 2017. J.K. Simmons will also star in the film reprising the role of Commissioner Jim Gordon from Justice League and we can’t have a Batman film without Alfred, which means Jeremy Irons will also be returning.

No official release date has been confirmed, but the WB is looking at a possible 2018 date, but could easily change to 2019 “if Affleck needs more time for pre-production, filming and post-production work. If it begins production by the start of Summer next year, then Affleck would have between 15 to 18 months to complete the film and get it into theatres in time for late-Summer or Fall (autumn) of 2018” said Hughes.

James Wan Talks Aquaman

Last week at the Australian in Film Awards in Hollywood and he spoke to both Entertainment Tonight and Aussie version of The Daily Telegraph about his upcoming DC Film Aquaman.

While talking to ET, Wan gave a little insight into what sort of film we could expect saying, “I kind of don’t  want to give too much away but know this: The spirit that I’m going for is like a classic, sort of, swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story. It’s ultimately a quest story in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone.”

This is something fans should get excited about because it sounds like an old school adventure film, the sort I remember watching as a kid, and using Romancing the Stone as a reference could imply the relationship we could see between Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Amber Heard’s Mera.

Speaking of the most beautiful couple in any superhero film, Wan describes the dynamic between the King of Atlantis and his queen.

“I think Amber and Jason Momoa, in their moments in Justice League, (are) going to give the rest of the world a flavour of what their own standalone movie could be, and that is just scratching the surface of what I plan to do.”

This quote tells us two things: A) Either Mera is in this film more than expected or Momoa isn’t in the film all that much. B) Wan has seen the script and has been told by Zack Snyder what the two characters will be doing.

Wan also caught up with The Daily Telegraph seem to conform Aquaman will be shot in his home country saying “I’ve been wanting to bring a movie to Australia for a long time now, and it’s kind of hard because you don’t really dictate where you shoot your films.

“But now, I’m in a position of power where I can say ‘If you want me to do this movie, this is how I’m going to do it.’ It means I can make the film I want to make” he added.

Good for him, Wan has made a lot of money for Warner Bros with The Conjuring franchise and the only massive blockbuster Wan has made was Furious 7, which went on to make more than $1.5 billion worldwide.

To true test of his power and control over this film and gets to make the film he wants to make, hopefully, don’t expect to see an “Ultimate Edition” or “Extended Cut” of Aquaman whenever it goes to Blu-ray and DVD.

Wonder Woman Becomes UN Ambassador
Last week (Friday 21st October) was an important date as it was Wonder Woman’s 75th anniversary and it was the day she was appointed an honorary U.N ambassador for the empowerment of women and girls.

The original Wonder Woman Lynda Carter, director Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot and DC Entertainments Diane Nelson attended the event in New York City to accept the designation on Wonder Woman’s behalf.

Check out highlights of the live stream below including speeches from Carter and Gadot.

After the event, Jenkins and Gadot took to Twitter to answer a couple of question from fans.
