A lot like with Lucifer, I wasn’t sure what to expect from iZombie apart from having pretty decent buzz coming from the US. I wanted to watch in the UK, but no channel bothered to pick it up, which is a shame because this screams ITV2 or E4. Thankfully, Netflix picked it up and you can catch season one on DVD and you should, it’s pretty enjoyable.

iZOMBIE is based upon characters created by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred for DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint. The series follows Oliva ‘Liv’ Moore (McIver), who was living the perfect life until she was turned into a zombie. She balances being half-alive and undead, she works in a Seattle morgue and eats human brains to be able to maintain her humanity. One side effect is she gets visions to how they were killed and with this ability Liv works alongside a homicide detective to solve the murders.

That’s right iZombie is a weekly “they solve it” and a very good one at that. The script is clever in how they establish the different types of zombie and how they need to keep some form of being form instead of going full on zombie. Meanwhile, the script shows how brilliant the human brain is, producing memories and with this huge library archive and where we develop our personalities.

The performances are brilliant, with McIver being a standout. She gives the show some much energy and personality as she does something new every week. It has to be an actors dream to be a different person every episode and even when she’s just Liv, she has great chemistry with Clive (Goodwin) and Ravi (Kohli).

The banter between Liv and Ravi is amazing and I could watch a show with those two in the same room for a whole episode of any show. Another standout is Kohli who should be doing more UK shows.

There are two negatives, Firstly, I’d like to have seen more of Liv’s transformation into a zombie, for example eating her first brain, and how she got to the morgue in the first place. Nothing major, flashbacks would’ve worked. Meanwhile, the theme music does get annoying.

Verdict
I highly recommend you checking out iZombie, it’s easy going and enjoyable with standout performances from both McIver and Kohli. You can get the DVD or binge both seasons one and two on Netflix.
