If it wasn’t ready confirmed with the success of Wreck-It Ralph, Big Hero 6, Frozen and Zootropolis, Disney Animation is fully back to its iconic self and with Moana they have a modern classic that’ll line up alongside Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, you get the picture.

Moana tells the story of young woman and daughter of a chief (Cravalho), who ventures out to sea on a mission to prove herself and to save the future of her people with help from demigod Maui (Johnson).

The animation is beautiful and the story is brilliant and the message incredibly important to tell young girls and Moana can be included in a line-up of strong, independent girls/women and role models.

The film wouldn’t work if it wasn’t for the superb and awesome voice talent of Cravalho and she carries the film all by herself and it’s just lucky the talented 16-year-old had the broad, charismatic shoulders of Johnson. Both had fantastic chemistry when they’re in the same scenes and it’s great to see Johnson basically playing a version of himself and it’s a joy to watch.

Nothing describes Johnson better than “You’re Welcome” (which I’m guessing every man will be using from now on) and it’s one hell of a catchy song and will get all the headlines for Johnson and songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Speaking of the music is was perfect and every song and score captured everything about the Pacific Islands wonderfully and even though “You’re Welcome” is great and will get stuck in your head. “How Far I’ll Go” (again written by Miranda) is a much better song, it’s powerfully and it made me cry and this should be the song that gets nominated at the Oscars.

The fact they got inspiration for one scene from Mad Max: Fury Road is awesome and is really effective.

Like any Disney princess/chief, she has her animal sidekicks (something the film references) and they were adorable. The chicken was funny and all, but I want more PUA THE PIG!!!!

Finally, you feel like you’re watching an important moment for Disney telling future stories about different cultures and I look forward to seeing my niece’s generation calling for a live action Moana.

Verdict

Moana is perfect Disney. A great role model for girls everywhere with beautiful animation and a great story and with Lin-Manuel Miranda the music feels modern and classic.
