Looks like Ben Mendelsohn is about to be typed cast as a villain for every big Hollywood blockbuster.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mendelsohn (who plays Orson Krennic in Star Wars’ Rogue One) is in talks to play the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Origins.

Kingsman’s Taron Egerton will be playing Robin Hood in the upcoming Lionsgate project with Jamie Foxx as Little John and newcomer Eve Hewson will play Maid Marion.

Otto Bathurst, who’s directed for TV shows Black Mirror and Peaky Blinders, will be helming the project and Joby Harold will be writing the screenplay with Leonardo DiCaprio attached as a producer through his production company Appian Way.

Robin Hood: Origins is said to be an “edgier” take on the famous story of the Nottingham outlaw who stole from the rich to give to the poor.

In fact, Origins is one of many Robin Hood based scripts around Hollywood with Disney working on Nottingham & Hood, while at Sony they’re working on a script called Hood, which is set to be more action based.

Let’s be honest, none of these upcoming Robin Hood films will have anything compared to the Disney (largely forgotten) animated classic and they’ll always be one true live action Sheriff of Nottingham – the late, great Alan Rickman.

This would be the first time Mendelsohn had to fill some pretty huge shoes as there’s no bigger villain in his career than playing Officer Krennic in Rogue One.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story makes its way to UK cinemas Thursday 15th December.
