2016 ended on a high for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as it became the biggest release of the year at the UK box office during the final few hours.
The Gareth Edwards-directed spinoff narrowly overtaking another spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them reaching £50.2 million ($62.3m) on December 31 to take the yearly crown after only being in cinemas for 17 days.

What makes this, even more, impress is cinemas aren’t open on Christmas day in the UK, unlike other countries.
The success of Rogue One has taken Disney have three of the top five spaces of the biggest hits in the UK last year, with both The Jungle Book and Finding Dory taking more an £40 million which is impressive considering the size of this country.
Plus if you take the money The Force Awakens did in the beginning of 2016 and Captain America: Civil War, Disney has made a crap tonne of money and claiming five of the top ten highest-grossing films of the year.

It’s only impressed audiences in the UK, but Rogue One also became the highest grossing film of 2016 in Germany and Sweden as well as being the biggest non-local film in Denmark and Poland.
Worldwide, Rogue One has made over $789 million (as of January 2), but expect it to hit $800 million by midweek. In the US it’s made over $439m, but expect it to smash $500m by the beginning of next week (via Box Office Mojo).
