Rumour - Could The DCU Become More R-Rated?

Following 20th Century Fox’s recent success of Deadpool and Logan, it should come to no surprise that DC is eyeing up the possibilities of developing its own R-rated films.

A report from The Wrap suggests a Warner Bros insider has told them the studio would make an R-rated saying “100% yes, with the right character.”

Normally talking about “someone said something might happen” means nothing and should have a massive disclaimer next to it. However, I really think this holds some weight.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice did get an R-rating for its superb extended cut which made the film even better! I liked the theatrical cut, but the extended version is so much better. Meanwhile, Suicide Squad would’ve benefited from an R-rating.

Just in case you don’t know what the American R rating means. It’s basically similar to the UK’s 15 rating, but sometimes it can also mean a hard 12A, for example, The Dark Knight.

None of Marvel Studios’ MCU films has been given an R rating and they’ll ever since they’re own by Disney and their characters don’t need it and you can see why they’re incredibly popular and make a crap tonne of money.

Meanwhile, it wouldn’t hurt DC to make their cinematic universe a little bit adult from time to time, but as the insider stated: “with the right character.”

So Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Cyborg doesn’t need to be R, they can and should play in the PG-13/12A area. The same can be said for Batman, but the idea of a more thriller, darker Batman film really excites me and even though Aquaman should be PG-13/12A if director James Wan wanted to return for the sequel and add more horror elements like The Trench, I won’t stop him.

Other DC Films that could work in the R-rated arena, Gotham City Sirens (humour), Suicide Squad 2 (violence, humour, sex), Justice League Dark/Dark Universe (horror) and I’m sure there could be more as long as it’s right for the story and character.
