We’ve fully got our Arrow back! After two utterly crap seasons dealing with magic and other nonsense, the Arrow that we loved from seasons one and two has made his way back in season five to come this year’s best DCTV show.

Newly appointed Major Oliver Queen (Amell) finds himself challenged on two fronts as he fights to protect Star City’s future, both as Mayor and as the Green Arrow. With his right hand, John Diggle, back in the military and his sister, Thea Queen (Holland), adamant about hanging up her vigilante hood as Speedy, Team Green Arrow is down to just Oliver and Felicity Smoak (Richards). But Green Arrow’s public defeat of Damien Darhk at the end of season four inspires a new crop of masked heroes to defend the city and a deadly new adversary forces Oliver to confront questions about his legacy.

From the first episode, it felt like we back home after a long time away because the episode and the whole season showed why we loved Arrow in the first place. He was DCTV’s own Batman and instead of fighting mystical beings or having a hard love life, Oliver Queen went around beating and killing bad guys.

The storylines are just cleaner; there are not as many plots to tackle and less murkiness when it comes to character development.

The villains have played a huge part for the show’s return as Prometheus is a great villain as you question what the hell they want with Team Green Arrow and Oliver pacifically. As the season moves to the final hurdles Prometheus becomes scarier.

Other villains like Tobias Church (though a little wasted and wish to have stayed a little longer), Vigilante and even the Star City Sirens helped carry the load so you never felt Prometheus was overused. They’ve even planted Vigilante as the villain of Season Six.

What’s also a massive boost for the season is the flashback’s in Russia as we’re in the final year of the flashbacks as by the end we return to the beginning of season one. They helped give the viewer understand a lesson Oliver has to relearn or remember from his past and a look inside the Bratva and casting Dolph Lundgren was a brilliant move.

The whole cast was superb this season especially Amell and Josh Segarra as Adrian Chase, who has one of the best storylines and character development in the whole season, if not the DCTV.

Additionally, the introduction of Juliana Harkavy as Dinah Drake in the final half of the season has already made herself a much better Black Carney then Laurel Lance.

Should you buy it or wait until it’s available on streaming?

If you’re a fan of the series or left after season three? I’d 100% tell you to buy it! If you want to give the show a go, then I suggest watching it on streaming and for people in the UK, it’s available on Amazon Prime.

Verdict

It’s so good to see the show returning to its roots! Great storytelling, plot, villain and brilliantly acted. Arrow season five wants to have its crown of the best DCTV show back.
