The film is a massive hit with the critics and the awards receiving multiple nominations at the Golden Globes, SAG, BAFTAs and the upcoming Oscars with Allison Janney winning three of those four awards so far. It’s about time for the UK to finally see what I, Tonya is all about.

I, Tonya tells the story of American figure skater Tonya Harding (Robbie) and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. However, despite being the first American woman to complete the triple axel in competition, her legacy will forever be defined by her association with the ill-conceived and poorly executed attack on the fellow US Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan (Caitlin Carver).

This is Margot Robbie’s best performance yet. As Tonya, she was strong and funny but also variable and sympatric as she has had a terrible early life growing up.

However, saying that Janney as Tonya’s mother and Paul Walter Hauser as Shawn nearly stole the film. In the case of Janney, she does deserve every award as she is an awful, horrible piece of shit but she’s also incredibly entertaining and funny.

Same goes for Hauser, who basically carries the third act of the film and brings so much comedy to the film and it’s surprising he wasn’t nominated for Best Supporting Actor awards.

As for the film itself, the whole cast brings the comic timing and the way they brought Steven Rogers words to screen with Craig Gillespie’s directing using cutscenes, interview accounts and voiceover made the film flow and there was never a dull moment. Furthermore, Peter Nashel did a kick-ass job with the music and score.

Even though people will always think Tonya has something to do with the attack, but this film made me route for her and believe she’s been treated unfairly by everyone.

Finally, stay throughout the credits and you’ll see how much Rogers took from the real-life people involved, it’s funny in its own right.

Verdict

Robbie was brilliant as Tonya and makes you route for her but Janney and Hauser nearly still the show.
