It looks like Warner Bros and DC Entertainment has pulled off one of the biggest director coup currently available in bringing Ava DuVernay into the DCU.

Deadline revealed that the Wrinkle in Time director has been entrusted to bring to life Jack Kirby’s beloved DC Comics fourth world saga, New Gods to the big screen.

New Gods focuses on two planets New Genesis and Apokolips. New Genesis is peace and idyllic ruled by Highfather, while Apokolips is a hellish dystopia under the control of tyrant Darkseid. After being locked in war for thousands of years both planet rulers traded their sons, Orion and Mister Miracle, and peace was brought.

However, peace ended after both sons united for their hated of Darkseid as the DC Universe’s deadliest villain is on the search for the Anti-Life Equation, the math formula to enslave all life in the universe and has only been stopped by Earth’s heroes working with the New Gods on New Genesis.

This will become the second time DuVernay would be handling a budget of $100 million and even though Wrinkle in Time didn’t do too great with the critics and audience the filmmaker proved herself with Selma and 13th.

Meanwhile, this is the first major hiring for DC Films’ new chief Walter Hamada as it’s likely New Gods will be DuVernay’s next project with possible major announcements at San Diego Comic-Con.

There has been some groundwork made in the DCU regarding the New Gods and Fourth World in the Knightmare scene in Batman v Superman and then with Steppenwolf and his Parademon army in Justice League, if only they kept faith with Zack Snyder who would have also introduced us to Darkseid.

This film will work as a standalone in the DC Universe as well as a launching pad to bring in more comic characters like the Green Lantern Corps.
