Last week Disney and Marvel Studios announced a number of dates for untitled films that’ll obviously become and shape Phase 4 and they include:
Untitled Marvel – 31/7/2020
Untitled Marvel – 7/5/2021
Untitled Marvel – 30/7/2021
Untitled Marvel – 5/11/2021
Untitled Marvel – 18/2/2022
Untitled Marvel – 6/5/2022
Untitled Marvel – 29/7/2022
For a bit of fun, let's speculate as to what could be taking these dates. With Avengers 4 slated to come out May 3, 2019, Marvel and Sony Pictures have confirmed the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming will be the first film of Phase 4 and dealing with the aftermath of Avenger 4 on July 5, 2019.
Besides Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 the only other film confirmed for Phase 4 is the final of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.
This date makes sense as it’ll be right in the middle of the summer movie season and Vol. 3 will also be used as a launching pad for other cosmic MCU films as we’re more than likely to get Adam Warlock and we could be meeting Nova for the first time.
However, I can’t see Guardians 3 to be the only Marvel film release in 2020 as I could see Black Widow getting her also film around the February – April period similar to Black Panther (February) and Captain Marvel (March 2019).
Black Panther is a critical and cultural smash hit and will differently end it’s cinema run in the billion dollar club and now it’s important for Kevin Feige to kiss Ryan Coolger’s arse as much as possible to come back and helm the sequel.
The quicker they do it the likelihood of making this date as Coolger will be time to write the film and a May release would be a perfect time to dominate the summer movie season.
Plus, Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa will be the new leader of the MCU once Captain America and Iron Man have gone after Avengers 4.
A-Force – 30/7/2021
It’s clear the female cast of the Marvel Cinematic Universe want an all-female team-up and I do think they’ll get it once Black Widow solo film comes out and the ending of Avengers 4 bringing in this film will cover that Avengers gap.
Yes, I would call it A-Force after the comic book and this date will be a good sign of confidence from Marvel as well as not putting a lot of pressure on the film like the first Guardians.
It’s odd we never heard news of a sequel for Doctor Strange after it did well in October 2016 and a November date will suit the character which is highly likely of getting a sequel in Phase 4.
Plus, he’ll be in the audience’s memory thanks to Infinity War and Avengers 4 and we could finally see him battle Chiwetel Ejiofor’s now villainous Mordo.
Nova – 18/2/2022
The Nova corps have been introduced in the MCU since Guardians of the Galaxy and there have also been rumours of Nova making his way to the big screen and this date would be ideal as there’s less on it being a February film then say something like a summer date.
It’d also cover the cosmic part of the universe as we’ve had the outcasts, now it’s time to focus on the space cops.
Ant-Man & The Wasp 2/Ant-Man 3 – 6/5/2022
Either way, you look at it this film will likely end Paul Rudd’s run as Ant-Man as this would be the sixth film he’s appeared and the same could be said for Evangeline Lilly as The Wasp as this would possibly her fifth appearance in the MCU (if you include A-Force).
Plus the studio likes to end solo films with trilogies.
Avengers 5 – 29/7/2022
Marvel like to end their phases with an Avengers and this would likely be the first Avengers film without Iron Man, Captain America (Steve Rogers), Thor and Hulk. With Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange taking up the new leadership roles.
Additionally, they could use this to introduce new characters and it’ll be the perfect chance to bring in the Fantastic Four and Namor.
