Batwoman and Gotham Is Coming To The Arrowverse

A major bomb was dropped during The CW’s upfront yesterday (Thursday 17th May) as they’ll be introducing a major DC Comic city and character for the upcoming Arrowverse crossover event.

CW president Mark Pedowitz and Arrow star Stephen Amell revealed that Gotham City will finally become part of this universe, in addition, Batwoman will be making her first ever on-screen appearance and “fighting alongside” The CW heroes according to Amell.

The Arrowverse crossover is an annual event that involves all of the Greg Berlanti produced shows – Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow – and this will be a new Gotham City and nothing to do with Fox’s Batman prequel show Gotham.

This is very exciting as there has also been continuous mentions and nods towards Gotham and Batman. Arrow has introduced Batman character’s like Deathstroke, Ra’s al Ghul was the villain of Season 3 (but we don’t talk about that season), Harley Quinn was semi-revealed and this recent season, season five, Bruce Wayne was name-dropped.

Meanwhile, Gotham was mentioned in Supergirl and Maggie Sawyer is an established character in the show.

There will be some hurdles the writers will have to jump as to why Batman or Batwoman hasn’t been involved in previous major events and what earth they’ll come from either Earth-1 with Oliver Queen and Barry Allen or on Supergirl’s earth of Earth-38 or maybe they’ll just have them on their own Earth connected to Black Lighting.

However, it sounds like to be between Earth-1 or Earth-38.

Overall, I’m excited to see Kate Kane finally making her way into live action and give Queen some serious competition when it comes to leading this TV Justice League as I’m sure we’ll hear about her training with Bruce Wayne. Additionally, I’m sure we’ll see a scene of her hooking up with Sara Lance or Alex Danvers.

However, I kinda hope it’s Danvers based on storyline potential as both Kane and Danvers’ relationship with Sawyer as she’s Kane’s ex-fiancee in the comics and Alex’s ex on Supergirl. Plus, I like the storyline idea if Kate and Alex did start dating throughout the second half of Supergirl season 4 of Danvers having to hunt and take out Batwoman to learn the truth in the final two episodes.

It’s going to be interesting how the costume is going to look as I’m sure it’s going to follow previous examples and be more of a homegrown look. As for casting it’s likely the network will look within their roster of now-cancelled shows or another TV star.

The first one to comes to mind is Adrianne Palicki as she’s proven to handle action as Mockingbird on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and she also appeared in John Wick. She also has experience with DC as they thought she was up to the task to play Wonder Woman.

When the news was announced the first actress to put her name in the hat was Frozen: The Musical star Patti Murin, who tweeted at Amell, and she has the added bonus of being married to Colin Donnell, who played Oliver Queen’s best friend Tommy Merlyn in Arrow season one.

Another candidate is Yvonne Strahovski, who has previously voiced the character in the DC animated film Batman: Bad Blood and could be a chance to bring her to live action too.

The CW is a network that always brings back one of their own if a show is cancelled or their character dies. Peyton List is a perfect example, she had two shows (Frequency and The Tomorrow People) that were cancelled before starring in episodes of The Flash as Golden Glider. Meanwhile, you have Cress Williams before he plays Black Lighting in the fantastic series, he was in the delightful Hart of Dixie.

Belanti could return to pick either of Williams’ Hart of Dixie co-stars with Rachel Bilson or Jaime King joining him in the DC TV world.

The last one to come to mind is Phoebe Tonkin from The Originals.

Just to throw a spanner into the works I was reading something yesterday that could be interesting if they went this route and if they do stay on Earth-1. In these crossover or Flash episodes we’ve seen double gangers of most of the main and secondary character, but one we haven’t met is Cheryl Leigh.

What if in Earth-1 Danvers is an only child of scientist parents and after leaving the army/special service becomes the protector of Gotham once a Dark Knight stepped down.

I don’t see it happening but it’s an idea.
