BAFTA 2016 Nominations Revealed

The BAFTAs have been announced with ‘Carol’ and ‘Bridge of Spies’ leading the way with nine nominations respectively.

It’s also a big day for Alicia Vikander who has been nominated in BOTH acting categories which is a rare feat, Best Actress for The Danish Girl as well as picking up Best Supporting Actress for Ex Machina.

Eddie Redmayne, Brie Larson, Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett were shortlisted for acting categories. While Carol, Bridge of Spies and Brooklyn earned several nominations.

The BAFTA Awards are the biggest and most prestigious film awards outside the U.S and is an indicator of who might win the biggest award of them all, the Academy Awards (Oscars). As last year the main BAFTA category winners matched the Oscars in all but the best film and best director category (as us Brits went for Boyhood in both over Birdman).

Stephen Fry and Gugu Mbatha – Raw, nominee for last year’s BAFTA Rising Star award, announced this year's nominations and Fry will also be hosting the award ceremony on BBC ONE on the 14th February.

It’s great to see Ex Machina, Brooklyn and of course our very own Damn Maggie Smith getting nominated and it just shows how great a year it's been for UK cinema with many actors and actresses coming from the British and Irish Isles getting nominated and we should be bloody proud of it.

However, I was surprised to not see Mad Max: Fury Road or its director George Miller nominated for best film and best director because it was a huge success critically and at the box office. Same for Fury Road lead Tom Hardy as I did think he too could have been nominated for both acting categories for his roles in Legend and The Revenant.

I was personally hoping Larson’s Room co-star Jacob Tremblay would have been shortlisted for Best Supporting Actor because this kid is the best child actor EVER! And if everything goes well and he keeps his head screwed on he’s going to be a star of the future.
