You need to know I love a good romantic comedy, in fact, Love Actually is one of my favourite films and everything Richard Curtis has directed I’ve watched. However, in recent years rom-com's have slowly died down and the era of films like Curtis’ doesn’t exist anymore, but from time to time you can still find a good modern day take on romance like ‘Man Up’ starring Simon Pegg and Lake Bell and you can now add Sleeping With Other People onto the list.

Jake (Sudeikis) and Lainey (Brie) impulsively lose their virginity to each other in college. When their paths cross 12 years later in New York City, they realise they both have become serial cheaters. Bonding over their chronic commitment issues, they form a platonic friendship to support each other in their quests for healthy romantic relationships.

The plot does have similar tones with ‘Friends With Benefits’ and ‘No Strings Attached’. However, this is a different kind of rom-com as their friends, whilst obviously attracted to each other, succeeding with not sleeping with each other. Whole it still holds up to the traditional clichés it has a slightly edgier, ruder tone.
The performances of Sudeikis and Brie were great and they had brilliant on screen chemistry. As Sudeikis has a lot of likability about him, while Brie is a delight and is breathtakingly beautiful and gentlemen, there are some moments in this film where you’ll go “wow” and your eyes will light up.
Even though it was a little light on the comedy there were moments where I chuckled, Adam Brody’s cameo being a highlight, which helped the story flow.

Verdict
Great, lovable performances from Sudeikis and Brie and even though it has the same clichés as previous films, it’s the perfect film to see on New Years Day with your date either at the cinema or watching it on demand at home.
