Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz Star in The Mercy

The recipe to get an Oscar nominated film. Get two incredibly talented previous Oscar winning actors, check. Get an award winning director whose last film won plenty of awards, check. A true life story about a person’s  journey and the struggles they’ll have to face, check and check.

The Mercy is one such film that ticks all these boxes, starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz and directed by James Marsh, The Theory of Everything.

The Mercy is based on the true life story of Donald Crowhurst (Firth) and his attempt to win the first non-stop single-handed round-the-world yacht race in 1968. The story of Crowhurst’s dangerous solo voyage and the struggles he confronted on the epic journey while his wife Claire (Weisz) and children waited for his return at home is one of the most enduring mysteries of recent times.

This synopsis has me intrigued and I mean if you have Firth and Wiesz then you have two of the best actors working today and this story overall has me interested. I knew nothing about Donald Crowhurst, but the fact this is a true story and a deeply sad one at that has me interested in seeing the first trailer.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear a lot of buzz around this film by the end of the year. With Weisz getting a large amount of praise and gets nominated for lead actress as I have feeling she’s going to have some great character moments.

The Mercy opens in UK cinemas in 2017.
