It’s official Darth Vader is back and this will be the first time we’ll see this iconic villain at his prime when he returns in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Entertainment Weekly unveiled the news on this week’s front
cover (a gorgeous looking front cover I may add) and inside their issue you can
find out more information about this Star Wars spin off, which comes out
December 16th of this year.
This is probably the best thing Lucasfilm and Disney can do
at the moment as there’s been a lot of rumours and negative press around this
film with reshoots (FYI reshoots are common in big blockbuster films, studios
plan them ahead) and then stories around the state of director Gareth Edwards
to which Christopher McQuarrie and Mads Mikkelsen rushed to the director’s
defence.
Plus, this news will get fans excited as many will be heading
to Star Wars Celebration in London in a few weeks and then suspect more Star
Wars news Comic Con the week later.
I’m slightly disappointed we didn’t get the Darth Vader
confirmation in the first official trailer of just him breathing or a dark,
shadowy figure at the end of the trailer. Fans (including myself) would have
lost their shit.
As I said at the top of the piece this Vader will be in his
prime and be killing rebel troops with so much ease, it could actually be scary
to see how powerful this Sith Lord once was. Also, it’ll be good for the
franchise as the last time we saw Vader he did this.
EW also released the names and character details and I’ll
give you a brief description of a few characters now:
Jyn Erso
(Felicity Jones)
Jyn has been living on the streets since she was 15 and has
fighting skills and knowledge of the galactic underworld that the Rebel
Alliance needs. Lucasfilm’s president and Rogue One producer Kathleen Kennedy
described the character saying “She’s a real survivor. She becomes a kind of
Joan of Arc in the story.”

Captain Cassian
Andor (Diego Luna)
Captain Andor is a by-the-books Rebel intelligence officer
and is brought in to make sure Erso stays in line, but he’s no square. He’s
experienced, committed, steady and practical. Kiri Hart, Chief of story
development at Lucasfilm, added e conveys a fair amount of experience and the
reality of what it’s like to do this every day, to try
to figure out how to resist the Empire effectively and intelligently.”

Galen Erso
(Mads Mikkelsen)
Jyn’s estranged father is the galactic version of nuclear pioneer
J. Robert Oppenheimer, whose doomsday knowledge is sought after by both the
Empire and Rebellion. “He’s one of those people that has insight into you know
specific aspects of just how the universe works,” said Hart.
It should be said Lucasfilm is keeping his image close to
their chest for the time being and aren’t revealing why Galen left Jyn as a
child.
Director Orson
Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn)
Director Krennic is the villain of the film, who leads a
squad of Deathtroopers to stop the Rebel uprising and wants to be in the
Emperor’s good books while trying to avoid the wrath of Darth Vader. “The bad
guy is a lot more terrifying when he’s really smart, and really effective,”
says Lucasfilm’s Chief creative officer John Knoll. “There is a lot of palace
intrigue going on in the Empire, with people conspiring to move up the ranks
and sabotaging each other. There’s not a lot of loyalty there.”

you’ll know who he is.
