2016 has been a great year for comedies with Deadpool smashing worldwide to Bad Neighbours 2 getting mainly positive reviews and with Dwayne Johnson’s and Kevin Hart’s Central Intelligence looking set to be the comedy of the summer.

However, Johnson and Hart will have to compete seriously hard to knock off Russell Crowe (Gladiator, LA Confidental) and Ryan Gosling (Drive, Crazy Stupid Love) as the best comedy duo of 2016 because Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Iron Man 3, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) has written and directed the best buddy-cop film since 22 Jump Street.

THE NICE GUYS follows wise-cracking detective Holland March (Gosling) and hard-edged enforcer Jackson Healy (Crowe) as an unlikely duo, investigating the apparent suicide of a young porn star in 1970s downtown Los Angeles. Also featuring Kim Basinger (LA Confidential), Matt Bomer (Magic Mike) and introducing talented young star Angourie Rice as March’s daughter ‘Holly’.

From start to finish this film is pure comic joy, the chemistry between Crowe and Gosling was brilliant and their comedic moments together match what Ryan Reynolds did with Deadpool.

You can tell the pair had a blast working together with Gosling being the stand out as you would never have known he could be so brilliant at comedy. While Crowe does a great job playing more of the straight guy, but he also had his comic moments.

I have to mention Angourie Rice, who did a good job and was the real straight character of the film as she made sure both characters were kept in check as well as being their moral compass.

You can also tell how much Black cared about this film as well as his eye for detail to shoot it in a 70s style, which was beautiful to see on screen. Plus, having Black and Joel Silver working together again, you can tell this was a modern Lethal Weapon with all the wit and action that made those films great.

I can proudly say I don’t think this will be the last we’ll see of Crowe and Gosling as The Nice Guys as it feels like a beginning of a trilogy/franchise.

Verdict
The best comedy since Deadpool. With Gosling being the surprising stand out in the film and will make you laugh non-stop.
