Changing of the Guard at DC Films and Lots of Suicide Squad News

The DC Universe is ever changing and this week we’ve had more fullout/rearranging of the guard at DC Films, while Geoff Johns (co-leader of DC Films) talks about hope and inspiration within the comics and a lot of Suicide Squad news.

Suicide Squad

A lot of this week’s news centres around David Ayer’s supervillain team up ‘Suicide Squad’ which is next film coming out of the newly named DC Films.

From being the most tweeted upcoming movie to merchandise slowly making its way onto our shelves (if you go to HMV you’ll see tees already in store). Also director Ayer posted a tweet of the soundtrack is getting underway.

However, the biggest news coming out about Suicide Squad and Warner Bros confidence in the project is that they’ve greenlit a spinoff Harley Quinn led film focusing on DC’s female heroes and villains.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed Margot Robbie, who plays Quinn in Suicide Squad, approached the studio about the film having dove deep into the comics to learn about her character and has already brought on a writer.

THR is also reporting characters such as Batgirl and Birds of Prey have surfaced to appear and lets not forget about Katana (Quinn’s fellow Suicide Squad member).

Personally, I’m all for a huge DC superheroine and villain led film with Quinn being the led and it’ll be less of a Harley Quinn solo film, more of a Gotham Sirens film. All I hope is Paul Dini (who brought the character to life in the Batman animated series) has some involvement.

More Suicide Squad Spin – Offs

As well as Harley, Warner Bros are considering more spin off films of their Suicide Squad characters with a source telling We Got This Covered the studio is “feeling very confident in the property.

“They think it’s going to be a really big hit and they think audiences are going to fall in love with these characters. I’ve heard more than a few talks of giving some of the other Task Force X members their own spinoffs, and like the Harley Quinn one, these films would open the door for a ton of new DC characters to show up.

"The Joker is a definite possibility for a spinoff, and Jared [Leto] seems up for it from what I’ve been told. They’re also really hot on Jai Courtney’s character Boomerang right now. Nothing’s set in stone yet, but you’re definitely going to be seeing a lot more of these guys in the years to come."

Don’t get me wrong, it’s great that the studio are feeling this confident in David Ayer’s film, but I really don’t think Boomerang is a character that needs a spinoff. If he is that good, then just put him in The Flash film as one of the villains or leader of The Rogues.

I think ultimately we need to take anymore spinoffs with a grain of salt as the only character so far we’ll see get their own film is Harley Quinn, but let’s just wait until the film comes out first before the studio forward anymore plans.

More DC Universe News

Last week there were rumoured Suicide Squad test screenings and I’ve though you have to take these with a huge handful of salt, because I’m not sure you’re allowed to tweet about test screenings, but they seem to be very positive. See more via Uproxx.

Batman News are reporting ‘Dope’ director Rick Famuyiwa could be in line to direct an upcoming DC project after seeing  on Twitter he recently followed DC Comics, Geoff Johns, Wonder Woman, Gal Gadot, Suicide Squad, Zack Snyder, Ben Affleck, Ray Fisher and Jason Momoa. If this is working on a project for DC Films, he could be working on The Flash or Cyborg.

Geoff Johns, co-leader of DC Films, was on an American talk show called Late Night with Seth Meyers and he talked about DC Universe: Rebirth and talking about hope and inspiration in the comics and fans are hoping he’ll do the same for the films.

Finally, in more fullout from Batman v Superman, Charles Roven (who has producer credits on Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy as well as Man of Steel and BvS) is said to be moving from his day-to-day role in the DCEU/DCCU to an executive producer for some of the DC moves. This isn’t huge news as it seems to be more of a changing of the guard from Roven to Johns and Jon Berg and Roven is still producer on Suicide Squad and next year’s Wonder Woman and Justice League.

There’s the latest episode of Heroic Inside and they made the shake-up at DC Films easier to understand.
