2016 will go down as an interesting year for Warner Bros when it comes to their DC Films, even though Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad were successes in the box office, they weren’t popular by the large majority of fans and critics.
Warner Bros aren’t as seemingly worried as many fans are mainly because Justice League likes “dynamite” and it looks like it’s only the beginning.
In a really interesting piece for The Tracking Board, Hollywood reporter Neil Turitz talked about the leadership and vision over at WB/DC after the departure of Rick Famuyiwa from The Flash.
Before I carry on, please take this with a grain of salt. The only reason why I’m writing/talking about it because it seems interesting and not a case of “I overheard someone, telling someone else about something they were told.”
So why aren’t Warner Bros panicking over Famuyiwa like every other film fan, critic and bloggers? It’s seemingly simple according to Turitz source.
“Sorry,” he said.
“We were too busy laughing about all the money we made on Suicide Squad
to worry too much about this latest turn of events with a movie that isn’t as
high on our list of important projects. I mean, it’s not like it’s Aquaman.”
Now, I’m sure people reading this thinking the worst, but if you really think about it the source is right. All due respect to Famuyiwa and previous director Seth Grahame-Smith, they’re not the big household name like James Wan and making a badass Aquaman action film would take priority.

Meanwhile, The Flash as a hugely successful TV show to take some of the pressure off the studio to find a replacement.
Plus, what would have the bigger panic button moment? Famuyiwa leaving Flash or Wan leaving Aquaman?
As everyone remembers during the beginning of summer, WB did some changes when it comes to the DCU. Mainly promoting Geoff Johns and Jon Berg to oversee everything and hiring Ben Affleck as executive producer for Justice League and also sort of babysit Zack Snyder.
Turitz goes on to say “Johns was hired more for street cred than anything else, taking advantage of his status as a superstar comic book writer.” He continues to add it’s actually Berg who the studio trust in turning things around, since he oversaw Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, and is viewed as a brilliant guy.
I think that’s fair Berg should really be seen as the “Kevin Feige type” and handling all of the filmmaking stuff like producing etc. while Johns can focus on working with the directors and screenwriters in developing character and story.
After all these changes, the studio is apparently feeling good about things for the first time in a while and the main reason is because of Justice League.
Turitz saying “Because, apparently, Justice League looks dynamite. Totally different from anything Snyder has done before and, in fact, reasonably coherent as a movie.”
He added, “Additionally, everybody is really excited about Wonder Woman, which looks amazing and is in good hands with Patty Jenkins.”
A big reason for this is probably because of the bollocking Snyder got from fanboys and critics for BvS. So having another (Oscar-winning) director in Affleck will benefit the film overall, but at the end of the editing, this has to be Snyder’s film.

I think everyone is in agreement after seeing the comic-con and official trailer’s, Jenkins is the right person to handle Wonder Woman. If this is a success critically and financially, I think we could see Jenkins be handed the reigns to the Justice League sequel.
Meanwhile, The Flash and Aquaman release dates could be swapped, with Aquaman already in pre-production in Australia and could move up to March 2018. This would give Warner Bros more time to find a new director for The Flash and sort out script issues and the film could be released July 2018 instead.

I’m going to end with this quote from Turitz “Which means that Warner is actually feeling pretty good about all of this and isn’t terribly worked up about what the press or the fanboys or anyone else is saying, because they know more than you do and are perfectly happy to let the chips fall where they may, and whoever doesn’t like it can go ahead and lump it.”
