Mummy Director Reveals Two New Monsters Could Join The Dark Universe

Creator of Universal’s Dark Universe Alex Kurtzman has revealed Phantom of the Opera and Hunchback of Notre Dame will be coming into this universe.

Even though The Mummy, the first movie in this Dark Universe, hasn’t been released yet (coming out this week) Universal are already adding two more monsters into their original slate.

While talking to Fandom, The Mummy director Kurtzman listed some upcoming films from the Dark Universe with a couple of surprising new additions to what they had originally.

“We know we’re going to do a Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera and Hunchback of Notre Dame, Invisible Man,” Kurtzman revealed.

HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME

This is the first time we’ve heard Kurtzman has named these two new monsters as future projects or even spin-offs down the line with additional characters.

“There are characters within those films that can grow and expand and maybe even spin off.

“I think that digging into deep mythologies about monsters around the world is fair game for us, as well and connecting the monsters that we know to some surprising monsters could also be really interesting” he added.

Furthermore, we know Javier Bardem will be playing Frankenstein in his solo film and possibly in Bill Cordon’s Bride of Frankenstein, Johnny Deep as the Invisible Man, Russell Crowe plays Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde and they still haven’t found an actress for Bride of Frankenstein.

Kurtzman then talked about who he’d like to bring into the Dark Universe and (shockingly) didn’t dismiss the rumours of having Angelina Jolie as the Bride of Frankenstein.

“I’d love to bring Michael Fassbender in, I’d love to bring Jennifer Lawrence in, I’d love to see Charlize Theron in there, Angelina Jolie…” he says.

I like the idea of Fassbender as Dracula, or even The Wolfman, and putting a modern spin on it if he’s some sort of Eastern European billionaire playboy. As for Lawrence, Theron and Jolie, these will be seen as Bride of Frankenstein, but who awesome would it be to see Theron as the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

The Mummy opens this Friday 9th June
