Wonder Woman Making Box Office History & Director Patty Jenkins Talks Sequel

It’s great news to report that Wonder Woman is a box office smash hit opening to a historic $100.5 million dollars in the America box office. Meanwhile, worldwide the tentpole took in $122.5 million, including £6.1 million in the UK and Ireland, to take the global box office to $223 million.

This has made Patty Jenkins the first female director to have the biggest domestic debut of all time. Whilst also launching the first major studio film franchise to feature a female superhero.

Wonder Woman also brought in a massive 52 percent female audience, which is unheard of for a superhero film, compared to the usual audience attendance that leans towards 60 percent male.

The A grade CinemaScore from audiences and 96% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics shows not only a major success for the superhero genre, but it’s also a critical success for Warner Bros and the DCEU. However, this is the fourth film in the DC Extended Universe to have an opening US box office of over $100 million – Man of Steel ($116.6 million), Batman v Superman ($166 million) and Suicide Squad ($133.6 million).

So what’s next for Wonder Woman?

It won’t be long, as we’ll see Gal Gadot return as Diana Prince in Justice League this November and kicking ass.

As for a sequel, I won’t be surprised if we get news this week that Jenkins will be returning to helm the next solo adventure alongside Gadot with a release date and some casting revealed at San Diego Comic Con.

Entertainment Weekly caught up with the 45-year-old filmmaker has already been thinking about what could happen in the second Wonder Woman film revealing it would be set in America.

“The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right.

“She’s Wonder Woman. She’s got to come to America. It’s time” Jenkins added.

However, at lot has happened in history between the events of Wonder Woman and her reappearance in Batman v Superman and we know she left humanity decades ago. If it wasn’t the First World War made her leave, what did?
