One of my favourite comedies is Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls because watching it as a kid it was simply brilliant and brought a needed smile/laugh to the day with Jim Carrey at full force in the 90s.
It was a few years later until I fully saw the original film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective on TV and being the TV edit it didn’t have the same punch as the sequel.
The reasons why I’m talking about the cult comedy that is Ace Ventura is because Deadline is reporting Morgan Creek Entertainment Group (who owns the rights) are thinking about rebooting the film and probably means making it a franchise no doubt.
This reboot is one of many Morgan Creek properties to make a return to multiple platforms with a big push across Film, TV and Digital and this would include titles like Major League, Young Guns, Dead Ringers and plenty more.
This push began five years ago with the TV series reboot of The Exorcist.
The one property to get people interested and fans excited is the possible return of Ace Ventura, Morgan Creek Entertainment Group President David Robinson told Deadline “we wanted to do a mainstream theatrical production relaunch because it’s episodic in nature, about a pet detective, it also lends itself to a traditional single-camera series franchise.”
Robinson stressed this wouldn’t be a straight remake, but instead the movies will have the spirit of the originals.
So if Morgan Creek does push this idea, the ideal home could be to New Line instead of Warner Bros or maybe a smaller distributor like Annapurna.
Then the big buzz will come from the casting and I think Andy Samberg is a perfect choice. He’s a decent actor, is funny as hell, can improvise and his mockumentary film Popstar was one the funniest films of 2016; he also has a Carrey air about him too.
However, I could see people involved giving the franchise to a female comic lead and I’m sure Kate McKinnon’s name will be knocked about because she does seem to be the modern-day version of Carrey.
Both would be following in the footsteps of the 55-year-old Carrey as Samberg and McKinnon are from Saturday Night Live.
