DCEU Shake-Up At Warner Bros Following Justice League Disappointment

In a move that surprised no-one, Warner Bros have made a number changes following the box office disappointment of Justice League.

Variety has revealed Jon Berg has been let go of his duties as co-lead of DC Films but will stay on within the Warner Bros family and become production partner with Roy Lee, producer of IT and The LEGO Movie, with hopes it leads him to a bigger job.

In a statement to the US trade, WB president Toby Emmerich revealed “This is something that Jon approached me about six months ago, and expressed his goal was ultimately be a producer at the studio.

“I first met Jon when, as a producer, he brought Elf to New Line, which remains one of the best and most evergreen titles in the library. We’re thrilled that Jon is partnering with Roy and anticipate their company being a valuable source of movies for Warner Bros. and New Line” added Emmerich.

Meanwhile, his fellow co-lead Geoff Johns will continue as Chief Creative Officer at DC Entertainment, but will focus more on TV and comic books for the company and will still be involved in the movies as only as an adviser i.e. gives ideas and pointers to directors, producers and studio heads.

The reason for these two movements is because both Berg and Johns are being held responsible (rightly or wrongly) for how Justice League turned out as they were both ”intimately involved in the production” with Berg relocating to London for some time and both have full producer credits something Variety states “would likely not be the case on future movies.”

Warner will now be looking to name a new person to run DC Films with Emmerich weighing up the idea of integrating the division further within the studio’s main movie arm. This basically means putting DC Films under the same roof.

Elsewhere, there are no plans in the foreseeable future for Zack Snyder to return to direct another DCEU movie, but will still be attached as an executive producer or producer on a number of these films such as Aquaman and Wonder Woman 2. Additionally, Snyder will still have his production deal with the studio.

It wasn’t all bad news for the studio as they feel like they got some wins regarding introducing Jason Momoa’s Aquaman ahead of his solo film in December 2018 and The Flash played by Ezra Miller with the studio still working on his standalone adventure.

Finally, there are more DC overhauls expecting to happen by January. Hopefully, one of them is Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara will either be banned from handling future DC movies or plan a long holiday away.

I think the reveal of Berg moving is so he can be in fall aim of Tsujhara’s position for the BS he’s put both himself and Johns through.
