A Black Widow Solo Film Could Be On The Way But Is It Worth It?

Ever since Scarlett Johansson’s introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Iron Man 2 there’s been an outcry for a Black Widow movie and it only to steam after the first Avengers film was released back in 2012.

Then add Captain America: Winter Soldier and Civil War this train was just getting faster and now it looks like Marvel is giving in to the outcry and are now moving forward with solo Black Widow film.

The Wrap reports the studio has hired writer Jac Schaeffer to handle the script for the spin-off. Although hiring a writer is great, it stills means nothing.

Schaeffer has made a name for herself in the Indie film world with Timer back in 2009 and writer has recently won praise for alien invasion comedy The Shower which Anne Hathaway is attached to star. Schaeffer has also been penning the remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels called Nasty Women staring Hathaway and Rebel Wilson and finally, she’s worked on the script for Olaf’s Frozen Adventure.

According to Variety sources, the film is in very early development and the film hasn’t been greenlit. However, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige had meetings with several candidates before going with Schaeffer and meanwhile Marvel execs met with Johansson about what they would want from a Black Widow writer.

To be honest I don’t think Feige has any interest in making this film because he always seems to hesitate about the idea, even though he’s previously saying he was committed. The reason because he’s a story and business guy first and he might’ve been forced to give the fans something.

However, the success of Wonder Woman and female-led films like Star Wars and Beauty and the Beast has backed him into a wall. Also, I’m not interested in a Black Widow film it doesn’t excite me.

Don’t get me wrong, I like female spy/hitman/action films, Atomic Blonde was awesome and hope there’s at least a trilogy ahead and I’m excited to see what Red Sparrow with Jennifer Lawrence at Fox and Taraji P. Henson’s Proud Mary at Sony brings. I just think Black Widow would work better as an eight-part Netflix series and could be the character to help bridge the NMU and MCU, plus how awesome would it be to see her hunt down and fight a character like Frank Castle aka The Punisher.

Obviously, no release date is being spoken about, but you’ll able to see Black Widow in Avengers: Infinity War.
