The Oscars have been announced and The Shape of Water is leading the way with 13 nominations including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress.
Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy romance has become the 10th ever film to earn 13 noms. Dunkirk is behind receiving eight nominations and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri picking up seven.
It’s been a great year for British talent with Gary Oldman, Daniel Kaluuya, Daniel Day-Lewis all up for the Best Actor category and Sally Hawkins is up for Best Actress and plenty more especially in the technical categories. Meanwhile, Edger Wright’s Baby Driver received three nods and I couldn’t be happier for him.
Even though I didn't write this with Oscars in mind, I do remember saying in an early pre green light meeting at Sony that 'Baby Driver' was guaranteed a best Sound Editing nomination. True!— edgarwright (@edgarwright) 23 January 2018
Even though there wasn’t plenty of shocks, for example, Gerta Gerwig got nominated for Best Director, but there were still some surprises.
Netflix scored big with Mary J Blige picking up a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Mudbound and the singer also made history by getting a nod for Best Song.
The Mississippi drama made history with the director of photography Rachel Morrison becoming the first woman in the 90-year history of the Academy Awards to receive a nomination for Best Cinematography.
The other surprises were Logan in Adapted Screenplay, The Big Sick for Original Screenplay and the horror/thriller Get Out scoring four nominations in Best Film, Best Director, Original Screenplay and Kaluuya in the Best Actor category.
However, there was some disappointment like how the actually f*ck didn’t The LEGO Batman Movie get in the Best Animation when Boss Baby and Ferdinand did. Elsewhere, even though it was a long shot, I was hoping Wonder Woman would’ve gotten some love especially in Production & Costume Design as well as Score.
Finally, the nomination announcement itself was pretty good, I love Andy Serkis and Girls Trip’s Tiffany Haddish were great together even though the actress struggled with some of the names I’d love to see them together hosting something like the Golden Globes.
I also enjoyed the short videos before the nominees announced during the technical categories.
