Get your dragons ready as we’re off to a galaxy far, far away as the Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will be writing and producing a series of brand new Star Wars films.
The press released revealed these new Star Wars films will
be separate from the Skywalker saga and Rian Johnson’s developed trilogy.
The surprise is that Lucasfilm is giving Benioff and Weiss
a deal to pen stories for films instead of a new TV series considering that’s
what they know best and we might’ve seen the first R-rated Star Wars related
content.
As with any new Star Wars news the first thought for many
fans, including myself, is could we finally see a series of Old Republic films?
And after seeing The Last Jedi I believe we have a better chance of seeing the Old
Republic from Benioff and Weiss instead of Johnson.
However, these series of films could easily be anthology movies
focusing on different parts of the galaxy and I think fans will want that post Episode
9 and the rumoured Obi-Wan movie.
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
Benioff and Weiss added their own excitement “In the summer of
1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever
since.
“We are honoured by the opportunity, a little terrified by
the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season
of Game of Thrones is complete.”
Disney CEO Bob Iger explained the hiring to investors (via
The Hollywood Reporter) on Tuesday (6th February), “Their interest was in creating
a series of films that are Star Wars-based and we’ve actually been talking to
them for a long time.
“To my knowledge they didn’t express interest in creating a
series. They have an idea for a number of films and at some later date I’m sure
we’ll disclose to all of you just what those are. They are focused on a point
in time in the Star Wars mythology and taking it from there” added Iger.
Obviously, no release date has been set, but a good bet we’ll
hear more news at Star Wars Celebration later on in the year.
