It was a massive DC Films day yesterday (Thursday 8th February) as we could have the worst choice of director to take on Lobo.
According to The Wrap, Michael Bay is being eyed to direct the DC antihero Lobo with the hope it could be Warner Bros and DC’s answer to Deadpool.
Bay has met with DC to discuss the project and gave some notes for Wonder Woman writer Jason Fuchs to work with during rewrites with The Hollywood Reporter revealing to include scaling down the film from its rumoured costs of upwards $200 million.
Which is frankly stupid money in the first place, a Lobo movie does have to cost no more than $95 million.
Anyway, these rewrites will be used to persuade Bay into taking on the project, but THR stressed there haven’t been any negotiations and there isn’t even an offer from the studio, these are just early talks.
The film will centre on a blue-skinned, 7-foot-tall, heavily muscular and tattooed alien antihero who rides a bike and works as an interstellar bounty hunter and mercenary. His popularity grew within DC fans during the 90s.
I’m going to be blunt, this is a fucking stupid idea. Michael Bay should never direct any form of superhero film. Just leave him to crappy Transformers films and awful small films.
This is a man who has no sense of humour and proved that with Pain & Gain and this is where I’ll let Mark Kermode explain as he can explain more articulately than I ever could.
This character could be perfect for Bay and even though I don’t need much character depth for Lobo, but I want to at least like him and laugh at some dark humour.
Personally, Guy Richie should be rehired, after he was going to direct the character back in 2009, but it’s unlikely after the issues between the British director and the studio on King Arthur.
The other suggestion would be The End Of The F**king World directors Jonathan Entwistle and Lucy Tcherniak, who showed in the series they can handle dark comedy and still have character depth.
