This past week while promoting her new film Terminal (which was critically panned), Margot Robbie has been talking about what will happen next with Harley Quinn with some exciting news.
The first part is Robbie confirmed to Flickering Myth that Harley Quinn’s girl gang movie will indeed be Birds of Prey with production starting January 2019.

The project will be directed by Cathy Yan with the Aussie actress staring and producing in the DC Universe film and smartly will have a “much smaller budget” as well as going for the R rating.
It differently sounds like Robbie and Warner Bros wants to go for that Deadpool money and with the smaller budget, it sounds like DC Films Chief Walter Hamada is bringing the same ideas that have made WB’s sister studio New Line Cinema a massively profited success with comedies and horror.

Take earlier this year with Game Night, it had a production budget of $37 million with a worldwide box office total of over $117 million and we don’t need to talk about the massively successful IT. That sounds like good business and profit like this is something WB would love and adore DC Films could do.
Meanwhile, Robbie also spoke to Yahoo Movies and after working hard to get Yan to helm Birds of Prey becoming the first non-white, female filmmaker to direct a superhero movie for a major studio.
The 28-year-old revealed she’ll be ensuring to have a diverse cast with her co-leads.
“Yep, yes exactly, real life isn’t so one specific image. We’ve got to reflect that onscreen” said Robbie.
This is great and could mean we might see a woman of colour/ different nationalities playing these characters as I’m for one a massive supporter of having Selina Kyle/Catwoman as a Latina or Asian heritage like Humans, Crazy Rich Asians and Captain Marvel star Gemma Chan or my personal pick Baby Driver's Eiza Gonzalez.

Additionally, this could be added fuel to the fact fans have been fancasting women of colour to play Barbara Gordon, to be honest as long as they have the red hair then I don’t mind who they cast, but Jane Levy has been a repeated choice.
For what it's worth, my picks for Gordon/Batgirl are Olivia Cooke, Hailee Steinfeld, Zoe Kravitz, Florence Pugh and (depending on New Mutants) Anya Taylor-Joy.

Speaking of Batgirl, as this is an R-rated film and Batgirl is a character that should be looked up by little girls and more all-round kid friendly and the fact see it was hard to see her in this film when the studio is developing a solo feature film.
It rumoured by The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez, the way Warner is getting around this issue is to not have Batgirl in it at all, but with an eye to likely introduce and spin-off to the solo film, but is to have Barbara Gordon appear (via Batman News).
Well, that is quite easy to answer because BATGIRL is NOT in #BIRDSOFPREY— Umberto Gonzalez (@elmayimbe) 8 July 2018
They didn't say that on the record, rather Justin tweeted. Profound difference. Was decided recently no Batgirl. Attention to detail, I didn't say Barbara Gordon, I said Batgirl. 😉— Umberto Gonzalez (@elmayimbe) 8 July 2018
Returning to the diverse cast, this could mean good news for Karen Fukuhara, who played Katana in Suicide Squad and is a character who has been a part of the BoP in the comics. Meanwhile, Huntress is a character you could easily change heritage without anyone batting an eyelid.
As for the now infamous Harley Quinn costume in Suicide Squad, Robbie confirmed Harley will also be getting a new costume and will move away from the hotpants and high heels to something more practical and less sexualised maybe something similar to the Arkham games.

We’ll likely hear news during the DC Films portion of Warner Bros’ SDCC Hall H presentation as it seems more than possible both Robbie and Yan will take to the stage and maybe give some more insight as to which characters could appear with casting announcements closer to the end of 2018.
