Since the first press screening, The Happytime Murders had a massive backlash and received a critical panning. However, I have to say is it that bad of a movie? No. Is it funny? In some cases but not enough. Is it a good movie then? Oh good god no.

Set in the underbelly of Los Angeles where humans and muppets coexist. Two clashing detectives, one human (McCarthy) and one puppet are focused to work together to try and solve who is brutally murdering the former cast of “The Happytime Gang’, a beloved classic puppet show.

I’ll say this for the film, it doesn’t hold back to make sure you know these puppets are in an adult world with things I never thought and wanted to see and you can’t help but laugh. However, they blow it seems like Henson blew his load when it comes to the jokes and shock nature.

As one half of the hour and a half movie is jokes and things will burn your eyes and the second half was more of a buddy cop formula and a lot of it unfunny. I've found online dog clips funnier.

You can’t take issue with the puppetry it’s brilliant and they show the magic behind the camera at the end. You can see the crew had a great time in creating this world.

On the other hand, this isn’t a good film. It hits clichés and the hard and soft nature of the two 45 minutes does highlight is the issues. Meanwhile, as for the human cast, McHale and Rudolph leave without issues to the point they should’ve been in the film more!

This film had such an issue my press screening was the DAY AFTER the film was released!

McCarthy was good in parts and crap in others so overall a typical McCarthy performance. I seriously think she needs to move away from these comedies and get her agent to get her into the drama. She’s a comedic megastar but the move is needed and hopefully, The Kitchen will help.

The Happytime Murders doesn’t need a big screen viewing and will do perfectly if you wait until home entertainment/ streaming with friends having a few drinks.

Verdict

Not as bad as most critics have been saying but this isn’t any good either.
