It’s taken time but we can FINALLY forget about THAT awful 2010 movie as Netflix announced they’re working on a live action version of the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender.
It has been revealed the animated shows original show creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will be back to be the shows executive producers and showrunners, this is nothing be fantastic news for us fans of the show.
Netflix will be working with Nickelodeon and production is set to begin in 2019 and believe to be a limited series something like 6-10 episodes.
This is the smart move as a lot of the money will be spent on the special effects during the fight scenes, learning their powers and for Appa the flying bison because you CAN NOT have an Avatar series without that beautiful important creature.
In case you haven’t watched the series, you should it’s incredible TV, then here’s a brief background to the show.
The series follows Aang – the last Avatar and Airbender – and his friends go around the world that has been split into four nations and native to the four elements – Water, Fire, Earth and Air. People from each nation will have special abilities to control the elements through martial arts.
The Avatar has the ability to control all four elements is meant to bring balance to the world and with his friends to must stop Fire Lord Ozai and his Fire Nation to save the world.
DiMartino and Konietzko briefly spoke about the project stating, “We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender.”
“We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone’s great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action, and world-building. Netflix is wholly dedicated to manifesting our vision for this retelling, and we’re incredibly grateful to be partnering with them” the pair added.
The next thing fans got excited about is the series won’t be white-washed, unlikely the film, and it will be an Asian cast that can speak English largely American and British as it should be.
The only characters I could see played by white actors are Aang’s friends and brother and sister duo Katara and Sokka.
However, I’d love to see Auli’l Cravalho and Ryan Potter as the siblings the other important cast members can be filled with semi-known names and Aang will more likely be an unknown.
