In a recent review, I described Outlaw King as one of my favourite films from the London Film Festival, Wild Rose IS my favourite film from this year’s festival and will likely be in my top 5’s of 2018.

Rose-Lynn Harlan (Buckley) is 23 and has a bursting raw talent, charisma and cheek. She’s also fresh out of jail with two young kids to support, but all she wants to is get the hell out of Glasgow and become a country singer. Rose-Lynn thinks her only chance of happiness lies in the Country capital of the world – Nashville, Tennessee. However, Marion (Walters), Rose-Lynn’s mother, wants her to settle down, accept her life and take responsibility for herself, but when a chance encounter brings Rose-Lynn closer to her dreams of Nashville, she faces what she perceives as a choice between family and stardom.

Jessie Buckley is a fucking superstar in the making and the making is Wild Rose. She carries the whole film with a dynamite performance which should get her BAFTA nomination. She’s strong, determined and even though she does things that should make her unlikeable, her personality and charisma makes you root for her.

There’s a scene in the movie that reminded me of a superhero moment of when Clark Kent becomes Superman as Rose-Lynn transforms from her everyday struggles to this powerhouse of a songbird.

The supporting cast does a cracking job also with Walters being the sometimes harsh but realistic voice of reason and sometimes a woman who’s looking after three kids. This is a refreshing change of pace of the veteran actress who gets to show some real dramatic chops.

Meanwhile, Okonedo brings a normal realistic look at the middle-class in Susannah someone who wants to help Rose-Lynn reach her dreams instead of the cliché evil character. Maybe a big help is the fact Okonedo is incredibly likeable.

Harper does a fantastic job bringing Nicole Taylor’s script to life as the story continues to make you guessing throughout.

The soundtrack is amazing and really showcases Buckley as a music star but she’s an incredible actress. It’s just a shame the general public will have to wait until April 2019 for everyone to see it.

Verdict

The film which will make Jessie Buckley a superstar. The story, supporting cast, soundtrack just adds to the movie.
