★★★★✩

It was a nice surprise when a sequel to Wreck-It Ralph was announced as it was a film that really didn’t need one. After seeing Incredibles 2, I was nervous for the 2012 follow-up but I shouldn’t have been because Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 is a wonderful family film.

Ralph (Reilly) and Vanellope (Silverman) must travel beyond Litwak’s Arcade and into the expansive world of the internet in search of a missing part to save Sugar Rush. Along the way, they encounter pop-up ads, high-stakes online auctions, Disney princesses and deadly online driving game.

Despite this being one massive long advert for some of the world’s biggest companies and rightly for Disney themselves, the world the animators and artists have created is utterly beautiful. The way of making the internet some sort of futuristic New York was clever and makes the internet a major character of the film.

As for Ralph and Vanellope in the six years since the events of the first film, they’ve become best friends and in some way a big brother/little sister relationship. However, the themes will be a big hit for probably a lot of adults and will teach kids about being happy with yourself and try not to have low self-esteem.

While watching Ralph’s story it did hit a nerve and this why Disney is so great when it comes to family films.

Meanwhile, Gadot is simply the best character in the film as Shank who’s completely awesome and have a feeling both men and women will have a crush on her as it’s basically an animated version of Gadot.

Elsewhere, as they do tackle these big themes, the film has plenty of laughs throughout and the scene with the Disney princesses is just delightful especially Kelly McDonald as Merida in Brave who gives off major queer vibes and it suits the character similar to Frozen’s Anna (Kristen Bell) and Mulan (Ming-Na Wen) who could easily be bi characters.

Also, the Vanellope “Disney Princess” song is great and funny.

Finally, this film does leave the door open for a trilogy which I’d like to see.

Verdict

A funny, emotional, beautifully designed family film with Gadot being the standout character, even though it is a massive advert.
