2019 has begun with a bang in the world of wrestling. After four months of teasing it’s been finally revealed by The Young Bucks and Cody Rhodes that not only are they starting their own wrestling promotion, but also announced a new show.

Announced on the Young Buck’s YouTube web series Being The Elite at midnight on New Year’s Day outside the Tokyo Dome that All Elite Wrestling is officially thing with a new event called Double or Nothing.

We have to see how it pans out across the whole of 2019, but the hype as gotten wrestling fans across the world excited and if they’re out a major backer could be a real threat to the WWE for the first time since the Monday Night Wars in the 90s.

As for the Double or Nothing show, it has announced on the All In Twitter account that a press conference will be taking place on January 8 in Jacksonville. This adds more to previous reports by Pro Wrestling Sheet that AEW is working with Tony Khan, whose family owns the NFL team Jacksonville Jaguars and Premier League side Fulham.

There’s also a poster for the show that features Cody and Brandi Rhodes, Hangman Page, Young Bucks and stable SCU (Scorpio Sky, Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian) and “more special guests” were advertised.

In a pre-recorded episode of Wrestling Observer Radio with Dave Meltzer the show revealed more info about the new promotion (via Uproxx).

Cody and others have signed to AEW, but Young Bucks hadn’t at the time of the announcement. There isn’t a TV deal at the moment despite having multiple offers.

It’s still unknown if AEW wrestlers will be able to work for/with New Japan Pro Wrestling, but Meltzer states understandably would like to still work there.

Finally, the success of the All In pay-per-view from selling out a 10,000 seater in under 30 minutes, becoming the first non-WWE or WCW promotion to sell 10,000 tickets in the US since 1993, to the success for the show selling on the Fite TV app impressed people who worked in TV and was the genesis of All Elite Wrestling.

It was also reported they didn’t want to buy Impact Wrestling.

Apart from that, we have no idea what AEW has in store yet which makes next week even more exciting.

However, just looking at the All Elite Wrestling official Twitter account they’re following a number of official arena/stadium accounts who more interesting followed them back. As well as being able to buy official tees.

What’s even more fascinating is how this announcement affects NJPW's Wrestle Kingdom 13 with question marks over the future of IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega’s future.

His New Japan contact finishes at the end of January and it’s widely reported and rumoured WWE want him and now will go harder with more money as they’ll probably try and give him the world.

On the other hand, if AEW were able to get his signature would be a major sign of intent and confidence in the promotion.

Again, we’ll know more next week, but day one of 2019 has just become a wild time for wrestling and could be the best thing for the sport.
