Top 30 Films To See 2019 Part Two

The Shaun Wren Blog begun the Top 30 Films To See 2019 list yesterday with a number of blockbusters missing out in the notable mentions and from numbers 30 to 21.

These dates are UK based and taken from Launching Film, but they could change.

Now let’s look at the movies in the 20 – 11 and just missing out on the top 10.

20. Aladdin (Disney) – May 24

There’s no doubt this live-action adaptation will blow Sony’s BrightBurn and Rocketman from Paramount out of the water and be in a billion-dollar success.

However, even though Aladdin is my second favourite Disney movie ever and Naomi Scott looks like the animated Jasmine brought to life, Entertainment Weekly’s first look cover with the image of Will Smith’s Genie looking awful but let’s hope it’s a lot better in action because EW does do terrible first look covers.

19. The LEGO Movie 2 (Warner Bros) – February 8

The LEGO Movie was one of the most surprising and brilliant kid's films to the point it was robbed for the Best Animation Film at the Oscar.

So it’s going to be interesting how the sequel going to perform with the critics and audience but the trailers showcase the fun again especially Chris Pratt voicing a new character based on his new success.

18. Spider-Man: Far From Home (Sony Pictures) – July 5

I wasn’t impressed by Homecoming it was same old Marvel and MCU. The only good things were Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and Michael Keaton as the Vulture.

The only other exciting thing is Jake Gyllenhaal joining the film as the villainous Mysterio and it looks like they’re building towards the Sinister Six. Additionally, this is the first MCU post Avengers: Endgame bringing a new era for the cinematic universe kickstarting Phase 4.

17. Detective Pikachu (Warner Bros) – May 10

Who would've thought based on the trailer alone this could be WB’s only billion-dollar success this year as the trailer was fantastic.

Plus let’s not beat around the bush as the animated/ live action Pikachu is adorable and Ryan Reynolds looks to kill the voice. Meanwhile, I’m all here for thug Jigglypuff.

16. Jumanji 2 (Sony Pictures) – December 13

This was the most surprising film in 2017 as it was incredibly entertaining and it made just shy of a billion and even though it was against The Last Jedi it had great legs. Now we’ll see if the success will repeat itself as they’ll be up against Episode 9.

15. Captain Marvel (Disney) – March 8

This is the first female-led superhero film and I’m looking forward to seeing Brie Larson be utterly kickass and this will be a success just depending how much it’ll make either just short of a billion or just over.

Even though seeing Larson power up as Marvel looked great, the first full trailer was incredibly bland and that’s my worry as it could be something we might’ve seen in the MCU before let alone in the genre.

14. Kingsman: The Great Game (20th Century Fox) – November 8

I like the Kingsman franchise with the first Kingsman utterly brilliant and enjoyed the sequel.

The interest comes from it’s not going to be comedic but more dramatic set in the 1900 and the birth of the Kingsman with a great cast including Charles Dance, Daniel BrΓΌhl and Rhys Ifans.

13. Shazam! (Warner Bros) – April 5

The second Captain Marvel film to come out in 2019 as that was the original name of Shazam!, but this will be the first time audience will be introduced to this character and for some a risk for the DCEU.

However, I don’t think it will be and it doesn’t need to make a billion and it won’t but if it gets around $500-$800 then WB/DC will be incredibly happy. Additionally, the first trailer makes the film look incredibly fun and it’s the superhero version of Big.

12. Avengers: Endgame (Disney) – April 26

The third MCU in the rundown and the end of not only Phase 3 but this era of the MCU and did think Infinity War was one of Marvels best because Thanos was an incredible villain and will enjoy seeing him just being a farmer on Wakanda.

There’s no doubt that only will this movie close one chapter, bring the dusted heroes back to life and hint to the future in Phase 4 but also likely be used as a way to begin the slow intro of the Fantastic Four and X-Men bringing mutants into the MCU.

This Paul Feig directed holiday rom-com stars Crazy Rich Asians Henry Golding (who he worked with on The Simple Favour) and Michelle Yeoh as well Emilia Clarke and Emma Thompson, who also penned the screenplay.

This is basically Feig’s Love Actually and that doesn’t excite you I don’t know what will.
