Top 30 Films To See 2019 Part One

2019 looks to be chock-a-block with a great number of films from all the main studios in different genres.

However, 2019 will be the year Disney will dominate the box office with a number of films hitting the billion dollars mark and two getting to two billion. They could seriously get close to the $10 billion worldwide box office total by the end of the year.

As for the list itself, I had to cut it down from my original 49 down to 30 with five more being notable mentions.

This list was used using Launching Film and all the release dates are for the UK, but dates and titles could change.

Now let’s begin part one of Top 30 Films To See 2019.

Notable Mentions

The films that just missed out but I’ll be looking forward and interested to see are Gina Rodriguez becoming an action hero in Miss Bala (Sony Pictures), Vice (eOne) is The Big Short’s Adam McKay new political film focusing on US vice president Dick Cheney with a great cast including Christian Bale, Sam Rockwell and Amy Adams.

Rhythm Section (Paramount) is a film I’m truly excited about as it’s produced by Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson and could be the female Bond franchise people have been wanting. However, it would’ve got in my list but we haven’t seen anything about this film from a poster, imagines or trailers and the film comes out in February means it’s going to be delayed or moved to Netflix.

For #femalefilmakerfriday I give you: -Our #TheRhythmSectionMovie producer, the one and only Barbara Broccoli. She is the living example of the quote, “Don’t mistake kindness for weakness”. There is no one more grounded, thoughtful or warm. Make no mistake though, she is a force unlike any other. You CAN be nice and powerful. She shows me that every day. -In the middle = Me ๐Ÿ‘‹ 14 years and my pants are still traveling ๐Ÿ™ thanks to you all. -Finally @reedmorano She directs, she DPs, she operates the camera, she’s a better actor than me most days. She’s full of light and life, energizing the crew with her spirit. She’s the most effortlessly cool person I know ...even though she waits to cross the crosswalk until the orange hand turns white ๐Ÿ˜‹. SHE is what filmmaking looks like in its finest form. Male, female, whatever. No separate category needed. ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก๐Ÿงก

While it will be a billion-dollar smash for Disney, Frozen 2 doesn’t make the cut on the soul bases there are other films that excite me.

The reboot of Charlie’s Angels (Paramount) has two things excited and that’s the British connection with Naomi Scott making 2019 her year and newcomer Ella Balinska set to become a star. Plus you can’t go wrong with Sam Claflin, Patrick Stewart and Noah Centineo from All The Boys I’ve Loved Before.

Now without further ado, here’s part one of The Shaun Wren Blog’s Top 30 Films of 2019 numbers 30 down to 21.

30. The New Mutants (20th Century Fox) – August 2

IMAGE VIA 20TH CENTURY FOX

This film came so close to being knocked down into my notable mentions because it was in my top 10 last year but the issues with reshoots and the Disney/ Fox deal could mean this doesn’t get released this summer and go onto the Disney+ streaming service.

The only reason it just made the list is that of Anya Taylor-Joy and the fact this could be a horror superhero movie.

29. Rocketman (Paramount) – May 24

IMAGE VIA PARAMOUNT PICUTRES

It’s an Elton John biopic(ish) so expect all the great music with Taron Egerton in the starring role, which is perfect casting and be ideal counter-programming to Disney’s Aladdin.

28. Mary Queen Of Scots (Universal) – January 18

IMAGE VIA UNIVERSAL STUDIOS

The earliest film on the list to be released with Saoirse Ronan as Mary with Queen Elizabeth played by Margot Robbie and basically, these two incredibly talented women are the reason to get excited.

27. The Informer (Warner Bros) – March 22

IMAGE VIA WARNER BROS

This is the biggest surprise entry for me in this year’s list as I only recently saw the trailer and found the story interesting with a decent looking cast. Nice to see Clive Owen doing a major studio film again, Rosamund Pike can do no wrong and this could be the best performance Joel Kinnaman has given on the big screen.

26. Fighting With My Family (Lionsgate) – March 1

IMAGE VIA LIONSGATE

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, wrestling, comedy and Florence Pugh is all things I like. As a fan of wrestling, I’m looking forward to seeing this real-life story being brought to the big screen as it follows the story of WWE superstar Paige coming from a UK wrestling family to become WWE's youngest Diva’s champion ever.

25. BrightBurn (Sony Pictures) – May 24

IMAGE VIA SONY PICTURES

As I’m not a fan of horror films (which is why you won’t see IT: Chapter 2 on this list) BrightBurn is a film that interests me on the sole bases that it’s a what if Superman came and grew up on earth to become the biggest villain on the planet.

Now clearly this would be a DC Comics Elseworlds story and the trailer does use Man of Steel as a way to promote, still uncertain if it’s respect or a piss take, but a cool story never the less.

24. Alita: Battle Angel (20th Century Fox) – February 6

IMAGE VIA 20TH CENTURY FOX

This film was originally coming at the same time as Aquaman and Into The Spider-Verse last month but Fox were smart to take it out and make a gap big enough to hopefully make some money in February.

I’ve been interested and excited about seeing this film since the first trailer but the final trailer making a real strong showing for more people to come on board. It could be the anime property to do well and open the floodgates for more.

23. Hellboy (Lionsgate) – April 12

IMAGE VIA LIONSGATE

As the rebooted Hellboy trailer showed it looks to be going for a more Thor: Ragnarok style instead of a dark, serious with horror elements take and I have to say I liked the trailer.

David Harbour’s Hellboy looks incredible and HOLY SHIT Big Mo from Eastenders in this??

22. Missing Link (Lionsgate) – April 5

IMAGE VIA LIONSGATE/ LAIKA

This film comes up against Warner Bros/ DC Films Shazam! but hopefully this makes money as the trailer was really charming and a talented production company like Laika deserve to make money and continue to create more original stories.

21. Men In Black International (Sony Pictures) – June 14

IMAGE VIA SONY PICTURES

Depending on social media reaction etc this could be the darkhorse pick to do well in the summer and this could be the vehicle for Chris Hemsworth post-MCU/Thor.

Meanwhile, Tessa Thompson continues to be awesome and will wear a suit better than I ever could (I’m not never sad about it). Then it’s confirmed to taking place in the same universe as the original trilogy with Emma Thompson returning and looking forward to seeing her and Thompson have great scenes together.
